I must say Bish, that is very sporting of you, wishing the colonials well on their national day.... King George III would be spinning in his grave ! Still, forgive and forget, what what ! Happy 4th guys.

As the fireworks sound outside, I'll post this as a reminder of another event that occured on July 4th.  General John Pemberton surrenders Vicksburg to General Grant on July 4th, 1863.  As Lincoln said, "The Father of Waters again goes unvexed to the sea."

(Photo taken this morning July 4th, 2017 at the Vicksburg Welcome Center overlooking the Mississippi River, Battery Benton).

I'm glad that the land of the free still has fireworks. They were banned in Australia in the 1980's . It was my first taste of how political correctness and a complete absence of responsibility for your actions could kill off one of the most important days (for a kid !) of the year. I still miss cracker night. Mind you, I suppose a lot of Generation X has all their fingers, toes and eyes intact because of the ban.

In actuality, the resolution was pased by the Continental Congress on July 2nd. It was published in the press on July 4th, some delegates did not sign the document until August, but the sentiments are appreciated.

Really, blimey, i thought we were bad. Wearestyill allowed foreworks. Though what was once called Guy Fawkes night is now just bonfire night. And i can't remember the last time i saw a Guy on a bonfire.

I guess someone must have deemed it bad form to burn Catholics, even if it is only one night a year.

Go figure.
