Warning , Warning , Beware Spectrum ! !
Posted by Tanker - Builder on Sunday, October 8, 2017 10:12 AM

Oh Boy :

I have had to do , it seems , a hundred maneuvers to get here this morning . As most of you are probably aware . Time warner cable was Bought-out By Spectrum .On a daily basis they've been insidiously changing the way we sign in and where we go . No More blank space on the home page to get to write in where I want go .

Instead I have to log out and wander over to Google and come in through my Goggle E-Mail back door. This for one who has few computer skills is aggravating .Sure I can post here and at Scale Auto . But normal stuff I don't know how . Like pictures .So to be able talk , even on line is better than anything else . I am thankful every day for the folks on both sites .     Tanker Builder

I don’t use Spectrum as my home page nor I use their email account. You can use whatever site you like as your homepage. It’s easy to set your page as your preferred homepage.

I set my homepage to MSN and my email is through Netzero after I ditched AOL years ago. Who says you’re stuck with Spectrum when it comes to a homepage or email?

As PJ has mentioned, check your settings.

Tanker, we have the Spectrum monopoly here in Winter Park and their service is way beyond atrocious! When we are trying to watch television, the signal degrades at random times presenting nothing but a digital pixelated mess on the screen. As far as internet is concerned, the service is just OK, but way, way too expensive. I guess the powers that be at Spectrum need to buy gas for their Bentleys and we, the customers, need to pay for that gasoline for them.

The City of Winter Park is pushing Spectrum's back up against the wall though. Winter Park has informed Spectrum that the city is deciding to lay their fiber optic cable and disconnect from Spectrum. Spectrum is begging for mercy. Yeah, like Spectrum shows their customers any mercy or latitude. Yay for local government actually doing something for their constituency! Yay for a big communications monopoly getting a big kick in the butt.

Everytime some company buys one of their competitors, the market shrinks, prices go up, and service is degraded. The giant corporate monopolies call it progress. We, the customers, call it getting the shaft.

When I first moved to Florida, back in the 70s, and subscribed to cable television, there were a dozen cable companies in Florida. Competition was fierce and prices were good and so was service. Then companies began buying each other out and here we are today. No free market, just monopolies calling the shots.

Tanker, I hope you are able to resolve your cable/internet issues. Spectrum isn't very responsive and trying to contact a living, breathing person to complain to at Spectrum is an all day job with little or no reward. Good luck, my friend.

My rant is over.

OK. In the stash: Way too much to build in one lifetime...

There aren't any anymore. There might have been thirty years ago, but certainly not today.

I use Comcast/Xfinity and have no problems. Likewise, I do not use their default homepage or email. As a matter of fact, I still use an old Hotmail email I started in 1998 and an AOL email from 1996. It's been linked to my eBay for 21 years.

Does Spectrum require their own unique browser, or can you use any browser you wish?

That's just the old chat program, AOL Instant Messaging, aka AIM. Now that virtually  everyone over the age of 13 has a cellphone, texting, snap chat, twitter, instagram have become more effective ways to communicate between friends. AIM was designed when chatting between people sitting at desktop PCs was at its infancy.

I have memories of my now 32 year old son in the basement of our quarters on Fort Knox instant messaging at all hours of the night. Knucklehead wasn't smart enough to disable the chime for incoming AIM messages. After a couple nights of that chime keeping me up, I'd disable the modem by pulling the AC power plug and locking it up at night.

The browser determines what the address window will look like. It may vary from browser to browser.

Also, here is a little tip to using the web.  Many people do not bother with the address window, since you must be exact with the address- spelling, punctuation, etc.  So, they just google the company or name of the website.  But, there are nefarious people on the internet who create web pages with addresses just like a popular site, but with possible mis-spellings, or with the .com replaced by .net, or some such alteration. These sites will show up on a google search, and if you are not careful and notice these alternations, you will go to that fake site, and these sites are not created with the best of intentions, if you know what I mean.  Much safer to use the address window.

In order to save typing, once you get to the correct site, you can use the bookmarks, or favorites or whatever the browser calls the place where you can store your favorite websites.
