Took a walk this morning
Posted by templar1099 on Friday, October 20, 2017 2:24 PM

Actually a drive too.My plan was to drive to Boston for a two fold anniversary celebration; the birthday of the USN ( belated Happy Birthday all you swabbies ) and the 10/21/1797 launch of the U.S.S.Constitution. Friday commute into Boston was as bad as I remember it but made it up AND found a parking spot at Castle Island,South Boston, home to Fort Independence.

It was a beautiful fall morning,68 degrees,no clouds, perfect for the 2.1 mile walk along the causeway to the fort. Coffee, smokes and great harbor scene. So, it's 10:50 A.M. and in about a half an hour the Connie will appear from her berth in Charlestown and set up off the fort for a 21 gun salute and a return 17 gun salute from the Coast guard station. I took my camera and settled in a prime spot on shore and statred to take a panoramic view of the outer harbor.

I settled for a sweep West to East and #$%@! no SD card. Long story short; after talking to a couple of local Southie guys I'm faced with a 2 mile walk back to the car, then a three mile drive into South Boston proper ( on a Friday at 11 A.M. )and a 2 mile walk back ( if I can find another parking spot ) all within a half hour. These are some of what I caught.

Yea, I was surprised at the lack of publicity beforehand. About 500 in the crowd where I was, not sure about the departure from berth, in addiion the harbor is narrow enough that most of downtown along the waterfront probably had great view. Also in the back of my mind is the new norm for large public, and particularly patriotic events.

Great pictures!  My brother lives just outside of Boston, and took the tour some years ago.  Being 6' tall, what I do remember is that below decks is SHORT.

Dwayne or Dman or just D.  All comments are welcome on my builds.

Thanks,I did manage to get some keepers. My understanding is that an Ohio class sub is more accomodating.

Thanks for the tour, good to see her back oout and about.

Yeah, got to figurre the Ohio's have a little more headroom, especially in the "gun" deck, and the grub is a lot better on them than what was available 200 + years ago.

I know they recently finished a refurbishment, she really looked beautiful, and yea 200+ years ago 'grub' could've been a literal term.

Yea, rather fortuitous, I learned later on that Logan tower diverted incoming flights to accomodate pilot requests.
