Why do I have to re-log in?
Posted by Cadet Chuck on Monday, December 11, 2017 11:06 PM

I have been a member of this forum for umpteen years, and still am annoyed that I have to "log in" every few months.  Is there a problem here?

Do you ever clear out you browsers history? I recently did and found I had to log back in at several sites including this one.

It's to keep us all cranky.

It was a lot worse about a year ago, like every Monday.

I do if I've checked the site from a different computer or if my computer's done an update.

There are other threads about this in the Feedback/Help & Testing forum, such as this one:

http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/feedback_help_and_testing/f/39/t/170738.aspx

That one discussed having to log in every time we access the forum, as GM noted, it was about a year ago.  Then there are these related threads in the General Discussion forum:

http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/general_discussion/f/9/p/1892014/reply.aspx

http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/general_discussion/f/9/t/170176.aspx

But as far as the baseline behavior goes, it has nothing to do with subscriptions, but rather, general security.  I think our authentications expire after an interval of two days.  I know I can return to the forum two days in a row, have my credentials default and not have to submit them again.  On the third day, I'm presented with the login.

ddp59:  No, I never delete my cookies for reasons like this.

Baron:  I usually stay logged in for months at a time, then all of a sudden I have to long in again.  Not a problem, really, just an annoyance occasionally.

Thanks to all for your comments!

I've been having the same issue. I have to log in pretty much everytime I visit the forum even though I check the leave me logged in box.

What's your browser and platform/device and operating system?  It might not be pertinent, but I know that when IE 11 rolled out, I had problems I did not have before, with the various websites I visit, FineScale among them.  I'd access a site and get logged in, either with stored credentials or interactively logging them.  After a couple of pages, I'd get prompted to log in again.  It was definitely a problem with IE 11 and how it handled authentication between the browser and a website.  I did not have the same problem with either Firefox or Chrome.  I'm running off a laptop, too, with Win10; I don't have a mobile device.

But that problem has long disappeared in my rearview mirror, since I abandoned Microsoft's browsers at that point.

I'm using an iMac desktop with Apple's Safari browser.  It seems to sidestep a lot of problems I used to have with a PC.
