I think what Timmy may be referring to is that post- photobucket, some of the good folks here are using other "free" sites, one in particular that has a lot of that stuff in its content.

Like "postimage".

Where do you see any such ads?  Here, in Finescale's or Kalmbach's pages?  I don't see any.

I understand GM's comment; other sites linked back here may have such content.  And such content can cause problems with web filters, too.  At my old job, our web filters used to block PlanetFigure, for example, because PF sold ad space to gaming websites, and our filters detected them and prevented my from accessing that forum.  They blocked retrieving linked Photobucket images in some cases, too, because of the ads that PB has.

But I don't see any ads of any kind here in this forum.

I don't see any at Postimage or with any images linked back to that site, either, to speak of that specific example.  That's the photo host I use.

They are "ON" the fsm website.

On the right hand side of the screen, just below where it say's "Subscriber only content"

It's always the top add and it cycle's through every few seconds.

Gennulmen - we're talking google ads here. What it means is:

1) We're not seeing the same ads - everybody's got ads provided by uncle google especially for him (her?)

2) said uncle analyses your net activity, purchases, search phrases and so on - and if google thinks you might be interested in wimmens lookin' for some sweet luvin' or russian mail order brides for some reason - that's the ads you get. Might be a glitch in the algorithm, but more probably you've been naughty! Which brings up the question: Do we want to bring up the question?

By the way, I've just read an article in the newspaper saying that google ads together with facebook, twitter and the likes are the threat not only to american way of life, but also to democracy and our civilization as a whole. I say thre's something to it... Their only goal is money and greed can be dangerous - but that's already off topic... Thanks for reading and have a nice day

Paweł

The only ads I see are for Kalmbach modeling publications and a bunch for World of Warships, an online game.

I think that what ads you see depend upon what you use to visit here. On my phone there are minimal ads. But on my tablet or laptop there are many more.

And yes, although I’m no tech type, I’m pretty sure that ones browsing history is influences the sorts of pop up ads that show up on screen. Not to mention the information that cookies fish out of your device. I get plenty of Spanish language stuff likely from my name even though I really don’t hablar espanol, at least not with any real proficiency.... and I do not visit any Spanish language websites.

I'm using an HP Beats laptop. One of the World of Warships ads has changed to an ADT home security monitoring ad.

Thanks for clarifying, Timmy, that's an important detail.

I don't usually visit the main FSM webpage, to access the forum.  I have the forum URL bookmarked.

Anyway, I just went there now, and I don't see any ads at all.

As others have mentioned, there are other variables involved here, which will impact what each individual user sees.

Read "World Without Mind:  The Existential Threat of Big Tech" by Franklin Foer.  It's not money that the CEOs of Apple, Google, Amazon, and Facebook are after, though they do want to be profitable.  Rather, they pursue a collectivist goal through their technology, because they believe that will usher in a Utopia.  Yes, it is definitely anti-liberty.
