Its not unusual in the military to have ash trays made from unique items like that: cut down tank or artillery round bases, etc. In my old TOW company, it was a status symbol to keep the front end cap off a live TOW round you had fired and use it for an ash tray. In peacetime those things were damn expensive to fire, as most were kept in war reserve, so it was a rare privilege.

Corum spelled backwards? I knew of the dry lake... been there many times and down to earth there a few of them...
There's a lot to take in there. Did you know that Muroc was named after the Corum family, early settlers of the area.
