Last night's storm has really thrown a lot of snow here in central Montana. Several schools have been shut down, which is incredibly rare for our neck of the woods. The news reports that hurricane force winds up to 90 mph are making travel in the mountains risky, so this has become a three day weekend for many of us. Time to hit the bench!

 

Wish I could be so lucky! All this stuff means overtime. Worked the airport all night last night...home, a few hours sleep, dug out my place and my parents place (Dad just got a new hip)....finishing up my dinner and back to the airport for yet another all nighter. Looks like all nighters for Sat and Sun too....then we're gonna hit 40 next week and it's all just going to melt away.

What snow?  None here in Utah.

 Only good thing about a cold winter is that arctic highs dominate winter, so we get a lot of sunshine :-) 

Being on the other side of the lake....cloudy more often than not, and quite low. I've been working on my single engine commercial add-on....2000' ceilings really kills the ability to go drill holes in the sky. Haven't been up in over two weeks now. When we do have clear enough skies, the wind is howling...that aint no fun!

My war room is also in the basement, even being finished and insulated, sweats and a sweatshirt are needed...until I rev up the wood stove...then the pants gotta go!!!

I live in the city so no bears. LOL!!! Mostly squirrels and chipmunks. We do get skunks roaming the neighborhood though - especially on garbage pick up nights during the spring, summer, and fall.

There are bears up in the Adirondacks though along with deer and all kinds of woodland critters.

Yeah, mine, too, Don.  I have the same problem-it's been too cold to sit at the bench.  So I moved my painting kit upstairs to the kitchen for the winter.  I don't do any building there, though.  For any gluing, and airbrushing, I still pop down to the cellar.

One good thing about winter, though, is that the piles of snow that get plowed up are a good source of fine gravel for diorama work.

I make good use of the snow.  I use it in my dioramas, but unfortunetly it only lasts for a couple of minutes in the house, so most of my work is in the freezer now. 

Ordinarily, I look forward to winter as prime building time. It ordinarily takes me a lot less time to blow the driveway than to cut the grass- about fifteen minutes vs an hour.  However, my snowblower isn't working, and it is too big to fit in my car.  So it takes a lot longer to shovel than to blow.  Finally, tomorrow my grandson is coming over with his SUV to help me take it to repair place.

But the other thing that is bad this winter is the cold.  This has been a colder than normal winter so far, and a few days warmer, forcast for early next week, is only temp- they say it will get cold again afterwards.

My workshop is in basement, and heating duct for basement is in ceiling. It is hard to push hot air downward.  What little comes out of the duct stays to warm the ceiling.  I do have a little electric space heater, the only thing that makes the shop useful at all, and that doesn't really make it real comfortable (my shop is 12 x 20).  I also wear an overshirt over my sweater, but still I get coldsoaked after an hour, so I don't get as much building time as normal when we have a cold winter. If we have a normal or warmer than usual winter, it is great.  Only good thing about a cold winter is that arctic highs dominate winter, so we get a lot of sunshine :-)

Everything has it‘s presence and it shall pass.  I too wish for spring to arrive but until then, I try to tell myself that if it’s cold, just put on a heavy coat and you’re fine.  If it’s hot, there’s nothing you can do about it!  So winter has a welcoming effect for me.  Because of my TBI, and Mrs. Toshi’s recovery, staying indoors works for us.  Temporarily.  Everything in life is temporary.  

I just hope that I continue to improve on my TBI and Mrs. Toshi is 100% better, then we can enjoy spring.  Until then, I slowly work on my Ki-61 Hien and see if I can do a very difficult (At least for me) camoflauge scheme over NMF.  I haven’t had a job since I got hurt on 5/5/2010!  

I try my best to keep busy.  I’ve had severe depression but with therapy, family support (Mrs. Toshi and my children), and lots of medication, I’ve been able to slowly but surely cope with everything, one step at a time.  You’ll be fine my good friend. In time, God will set things straight for you.

I don't mind the weather.  What bothers me is how the weathertainment media gin up hyperbole for every snowfall, just as they do for every other type of weather.  And people eat it up, and get panicky.

 

Ain't that the truth!!! My take - west coast - wildfires, earthquakes, mudslide. Midwest - tornadoes. South - fireants, gators, hurricanes, high humidity / heat. Southwest - rattlesnakes, scorpions, tarantulas. high heat. I'd rather stay in New England thank you very much.

Do what I did- buy a $500 snowblower next September and you will be guaranteed a snow free season!  Worked for me!

 

That is the best idea ever.

We get little to no snow in north Texas but we pay deary July-September.  I second the idea of a warm weather project.  A convertibly something might take your mind away to sumer days!

I am a member of an advisory council for BLM (the federal version).  We get fire reports, and I watch NWCC on fire status during the season.  Also work on fire rehab projects and forest health projects that try and cut down on severity.

 Every year we are short on snow here, I shudder to think of the fires come July-Sept.  This year looks like it will be another nasty one out west.

But the bright side out here, is when you come home, your house is where you left it.  Might not be in the same condition, but at least it's not four states away.

The wife and I always thought about moving to Florida when I retired. One time we were visiting there and hurricane Floyd hit. We made it inland to a hotel and sat it out somewhere on the upper floors and watched all kinds of stuff fly by the windows including a gas station price sign (the large electric ones). That changed our minds for us.

Now we don't have to worry about the snow or the growing grass as we live in a cottage in a retirement village. They cut the grass and pick up the leaves, trim the bushes and do the mulching and also anything inside the house that needs being done. All we do is pick up the phone and call. They shovel the walks right up to the door and plow the streets.  SSSOOOOOOOOO, I just spend as much time at the bench as I want, when I want. As I sit here typing this, the plow truck is doing it's thing and there is someone shovelling our walk and putting down some salt.

I love work! I could sit here and watch it all day. OH, I do. Lol,lol,lol.

 I remember that years ago when John Cameron Swazye gave the news and weather he said we'd get Lake effect snow . Possibly up to twenty inches .There were no names for storms in winter that dropped about an inch or dropped a couple of feet of the stuff . Now they name everything and spend hours talking about the same thing !

I'm the opposite,now that I am not working,I really enjoy looking at the snow knowing I dont have to face a commute anymore.The bad weather helps my benchtime becsuse I cant go out,so zi spend more time st the bench.Some say watch some war movies to get back in the groove.

Never thought of that of that one. I bought a generator 2yrs ago electric hasn' went off since.

It is particularly bad this year. I like the postive idea posts above.

I wonder if you might have SAD. I do. I find vitamin D3 supplements help, and so does sitting under my HO (High Output) shop light above my work/modeling bench for 1/2 or so a day. I don't do it daily, far from it but when I do , I feel the difference.

I can not say that I get any joy out of Summer...that's just the season that I make all my money in, so I can enjoy my Winter!

What I don't like...is the frequency of the snow this year. I get the graveyard shift at my local airport, to keep the runway clear in case "Survival Flight" has to go out. Anything more than a dusting and they can't go. I'd prefer to get a good amount of snow all at once...once every two weeks or so. Had to pull an all-nighter last night, for a whopping 3/4"....all-nighter the night before, for 1.5". Looks like more this weekend too. 

I just wanna go down to the "War room" and build my models!

You are exactly right I complain about the cold then used to complain about the heat when I was working . But since I not working any more I don't complain about the heat. When it' warm out my body fells so much better. Getting old a b####!

Hang in there Armor, Spring will come. ONE DAY AT A TIME. I wish we had some of your snow out here in the West, ya'll have been getting hammered. Try to stsy focused on the now, keep moving in a positive direction to make the changes you WANT to make. Life changes take steps that must be completed in order or you end up in chaos. Stsy strong your not alone, I miss my motorcycle.
