Oddly enough, my wife and I just toured an escort destroyer named after one of those brave men. The USS Slater is permanently docked on the Hudson River in Albany, NY, and has been restored through the efforts of private donations. The Slater was commissioned in 1945, and did three convoy escorts in the North Atlantic, and then was assigned to the Pacific. It was then loaned to the Greek navy, who returned it 40 years later. Pictures before restoration show a rust-bucket.
Here a few a pictures I took during the tour:

Hope you enjoyed the pictures. We really appreciated the volunteer who gave the tour. He did say the Slater was named after a sailor who died in battle, and your post helped me to connect with who that sailor was. Thank you for the post!
