He still has frozen water in his veins. Iceman (Val Kilmer) is making his return with Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick
Kilmer, 58, is reprising the Tom “Iceman” Kazansky pilot role which shot him to superstardom 32 years ago in 1986's
Top Gun, according to The Wrap and The Hollywood Reporter. Kilmer was spotted in the San Diego hotel headquarters where Top Gun: Maverick is underway, according to TheWrap, which originally broke the news.
Cruise tweeted on May 31 that production for the long-awaited sequel had started. Iceman and Maverick (Tom Cruise) had a frosty, adversarial relationship in Top Gun, vying for ace pilot status at the legendary military flight school. Iceman's famous line to Maverick was: "I don't like you because you're dangerous."
At the end, however, Iceman told Maverick, "You can be my wing man anytime. " Kilmer has been vying for the Top Gun: Maverick role since it was announced last year. In a May 2018 Instragram post, Kilmer alluded to the fact that Iceman beat out Maverick for the Top Gun Trophy given to the top pilot in the original film. "I'm ready Tom- still got my top gun plaque! Still got the moves! Still got it!," Kilmer wrote.
Kilmer revealed in December that he had battled throat cancer for two years. Top Gun: Maverick is set to hit theaters July 12, 2019. Joseph Kosinski is directing.
