Sgt Bill Speakman VC has passed away aged 90, he died on Wed 22nd June. Sgt Speakman recieved his VC for his actions in Korea in Nov 1951.
''On 4 November 1951 in Korea, when the section holding the left shoulder of the company's position had been seriously depleted by casualties and was being overrun by the enemy, Speakman, on his own initiative, collected six men and a pile of grenades and led a series of charges. He broke up several enemy attacks, causing heavy casualties and in spite of being wounded in the leg continued to lead charge after charge. He kept the enemy at bay long enough to enable his company to withdraw safely.''
He was the first person to recieved an award from Her Majesty Queen Elizebeth II, though the VC had been awarded by her father, George VI.
He later joined the SAS and served in other conflicts before leaving the army in 1967.

Sad news, Bish. We're losing our Korean War vets increasingly, so it's good to honor them and remember.
My own uncle, MSgt. John Stewart passed away 2 years ago, a 30 year U.S. Marine veteran of both Korea and Vietnam.

Bish - Sgt. Speakman was indeed a right proper soldier, I'm glad he was honored in such a manner. Tonight I'll salute him and all the other vet's, by hoisting a Boddington to honor their service and bravery.
