Only an entity like NASA or Russia’s or China’s space agencies can afford a true manned space program at this time. Virgin Galactic’s achievement is great stuff, but it’s essentially rehashing the X-15 or other such programs from nearly 60  years ago. But instead of a single test pilot onboard, they now have several occupants.

nasa does not pay for all flights by Space-X and other companies if those companies are launching other companies satellites & experiments into space not related to nasa or military.

Ah, true.  Satellites have been true commercial going way back.  Comm satellites were launched on boosters made by industry even then.  I was thinking of manned space.

Congrats to Virgin Galactic for the great flight of Unity.  The video from it was wonderful!

I cannot see calling flights by Space-X and other companies civilian space flight when NASA pays for the flights.  How is that different from flights of Apollo (built by North American) or Gemini (built by McDonnell).  My understanding is flights of VG craft are all on VG's buck!
