If you look close you can see bullet holes near the cockpit. The plane was washed a  few years ago. The bullet holes remain.

I went through U-505 when I was about 13-14 back in about '70 when she was outside.  Tight for me even as a kid.

I went through the U-505 as a kid also, around that same time, during a vacation trip to Chicago.  I remember feeling claustrophobic in there and was glad to get out.  Haven't been back to that museum since I was a kid.  I do remember seeing the Stuka hanging from the ceiling.  I remember that because I was dissapointed that it didn't have the wheel pants around the landing gear.  lol...  the things we remember.

Cheers,
Mark

I had an uncle that served in the submarine service during WWII.  I always thought that he was a great guy for serving in those subs. But when I went aboard a couple of them that we have on display here in the states, I realized just how great those men really were. I'm trained in search and rescue and am not claustrophobic, but I don't think I could handle having depth charges dropping on me and not being able to open a door and running as fast as my legs would go. Wish I could have had more time to spend with him.

It was a good thing to bring her inside. When she was outside she was deteriorating in the Chicago weather.

It is an amazing experience to walk through the boat. It looks so large on the outside, yet it is so small and cramped inside. Pipes, valves, guages waterproof doors everywhere. You have to give those sailors a lot of credit for going underwater in that thing.

That's a great video. The amount of work required to restore the airplane is impressive.

If you are ever in Chicago, be sure to visit the Museum of Science and Industry. They  have a Stuka hanging from the ceiling.

They also have a  Spitfire hanging from the ceiling close on the tail of the Stuka.

However, there Crown Jewel is a real German U-boat that you can walk through. This one is not hanging from the ceiling.Big Smile The display room that houses the U-boat is outstanding. It is modeled after a concrete U-boat pen.

JohnnyK,

Great share, the next time I am in that area I am definitely going to stop in. Thank you sir.

Thanks for the link mark, that is amazing what they are doing there. I might now have an excuse to travel to the states when this is in the air.

I’ve heard about a Stuka being restored to flying condition through FlyPast magazine a couple months back or so.

I do know for a fact they are restoring the IL-2 Sturmovick as well that was found in a frozen lake.

Stumbled across this video on Youtube...  I had no idea this was even in the works.  Pretty amazing.  Especially since they have a Jumo engine for it.
