Apollo 11 in Real Time

Here is a site where you can listen to the Apollo transmissions in "real time", that is as they occurred.  On this date as I write this, Eagle has undocked from the command module and is preparing for descent.

Fascinating to listen to!

You're welcome, guys!  In "real time", they're just now getting ready to depressurize the LM for egress.   Smile

This has been a great week for remembering the landing. Thanks for setting up the post.

I posted the story about the Jamesburg Earth Station. Going up there next month with a friend who has the keys, I'll post any pictures.

I got to thinking about why Pesident Nixon would be on the Hornet to greet the astronauts. So I looked it up, and if I may a little bit of history.

He'd been in office less than six months, but as these things go was now the boss of the program.

Hornet was positioned about 800 nautical miles ssw of Hawaii. The President and the First Lady flew out to Hawaii in anticipation of the recovery. There was some question about whether FLOTUS would accompany POTUS to the Hornet .

In the event, FLOTUS stayed in Hawaii. POTUS flew from Oahu to Johnston Island AFB, and was transferred by helicopter to the USS Arlington CVL-48 where he spent the night. The next day POTUS was flown to Hornet.

FLOTUS did not accompany POTUS although the Admirals Quarters on Hornet had been upgraded to accommodate her.

Little piece of history. It kind of struck me that it was a pretty significant effort by POTUS to appreciate the mission.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

I look forward to the pictures!  I understand the station is not as it once was during the Apollo flights, as a previous owner stripped out the equipment and sold it for scrap!  It will be interesting to see the site, however.  You're very lucky!
