Books given to me from my older brother Demetri
Posted by Tosh on Sunday, September 22, 2019 7:21 AM

My older brother is Demetri.  He is not truly my older brother by blood but by heart!  I met him and his family many years ago when I was the Master Sushi Chef at the Bertram Inn and Conference Center owned by the Wolstein's.  He has watched over me and my family and at times taken care of us.

Mrs. Toshi and I started our own entrepreneurship due to Demetri building in ground swimming pools.  That business was a blast.  I learned so much from Demetri.  He now moved to Florida.  We are constantly in contact with each other.  I love him so much.  He recently came to visit Mrs. Toshi and I and brought books for me.

Demetri and Debbie his spouse are always amazed at my models.  They ask questions and are interested with WWII history.  They really like the idea in that Ezra my grandson makes models with me.  Here are photos of the books, he even has one on Princess Liliuokalani the last monarch of Hawaii.

I only see the one book by Queen Liliuokalani. That is an incredible heartbreaking story. One of the more nauseating episodes in American history.

I admire your interest, I don't think I would want to read it a second time.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

It's the price we pay for being well read.

Somebody smart once said "If you would be right, read." I heard it attributed to Ben Franklin, but can't find anything to substantiate that. Anyway, by reading we get wiser, potentially, but we also get to find out all sorts of garbage that exposes our inner crapiness and/or stuff we really didn't want to know.

Hopefully, we take that crap and use it to improve ourselves and thus our chunk of society. But, that may be a tad overly optimistic.

"Why do I do this? Because the money's good, the scenery changes and they let me use explosives, okay?"

Indeed, as General Mattis said;

"Stop reading, start dying".

If you don't like to read, you haven't found the right book"

Thank you GMorrison.   You're a great friend and I always look forward to your comments.  My dad also played the trumpet, he was my first trumpet teacher.  Where am I going with this?

He was the first trumpet in the Royal Hawaiian Band which was created by Kamehameha the III and then the IV.  I used to follow him as a kid and play on the steps of Iolani Palace the only Royal Palace in the US.  That's where Queen Liliuokalani was imprisoned.  The Royal Guard house is still there.  It's made with coral blocks.  I used to scrape sea shells out of the blocks.

What's worse is my in-law, Mrs. Toshi's sister married a Hawaiian man of mixed background.  Chinese and Portugese to name a few.  It is very common as there are no pure Hawaiians anymore.  Unless you go to the island of Ni'ihau.  It is forbidden to go there, only scientists from the university of Hawaii are allowed to go there.  Anyway, her husband past away a few years ago.  So Mrs. Toshi's sister lives on Hawaiian Homestead land.  Only people of Hawaiian decent can live there.  Mrs. Toshi's sister is half Japanese and half Filipino.  Their children of course have very little Hawaiian in them.  The state wants to evict them and give the house away.

So till this day, the people of Hawaiian decent or connected by marriage are still being harassed.  What can I say.

A lot of people don't have a real friend like Dimitri in their lives. You are fortunate to have him, and I'm glad you do, Toshi.

Sir, you're an inspiration.  We humans have a dark history.  But we can try to change things.  It's all up to us.  Thank you for reading and writing on this thread, it's greatly appreciated.

Thank you Greg.  When he leaves to go back to Florida, I always feel sad.  A few years ago he ate at Shula's (Don Shula NFL Coach of the Miami Dolphins) and Don Shula was there.  So he got Don Shula to sign a cardboard coaster to Toshi and took a picture of that.  He mailed the coaster to me after all that.

He did that as he knows my love for the 32 NFL teams.  Thank you sir for reading and writing on my thread!
