With all the smoke and mirrors going on,I just realized no one mentioned the passing of John Prine, an astute chronicler of society.

Well, I'm sorry to say I never heard of him... But maybe I know his song or songs and I just don't know they're his? What would you say was his most popular song?

Thing is, there were times in Poland, when an artist could get famous just because an influential radio journalist (and there were like ten of them) bought or was given a record of a western-world performer. Sometimes really very few records crossed the iron curtain!

I'd have to say that " Angel From Montomgery " was his most well known without most people knowing it was his song. Early record company PR had him billed as ' the next Dylan'. His lyrics equal Dylans more often than not without poetic trappings.

Pawel, he's well worth looking into if you're a music fan. An inventive and perceptive observer of the human condition...but always with a wry and often painfully honest sense of humor. His most well-known songs are probably "Hello In There" and "Sam Stone," both of which give a pretty good feel for his work.

However, my personal favorite has always been a bouncy, tongue-in-cheek number called "Fish and Whistle":

Father forgive us for what we must do
You forgive us and we'll forgive you
We'll forgive each other 'til we both turn blue
And we'll whistle and go fishing in heaven....

He's also a writer that's been covered by scads of other more famous artists...always an indication of how his amazing talent was valued and admired by his peers.

Not bad for an ex-mailman from Maywood Illinois.

Cheers

Tickmagnet

Never heard of him.

That's okay.

He probably never heard of you, either. Wink

John Prine was a seriously talented guitarist, song writer and singer, I always enjoyed it when I could catch a performance on the tube. He had a variety of writing styles, sadness, comedy and factual.

A Prine quote: He lived next door to a female country star, when asked about her he said, "never met her, all I know is she has three garbage  cans, and I only have one."

Yup, really good for a mailman from Maywood, catch him on youtube, well worth a look.

He was a good friend of Steve Goodman. Tell me you've heard of him. "City of New Orleans".

John Prine is one of those artists you learned about by word of mouth.

Like "Hey, I just picked up this record. You gotta hear this guy".

I had the pleasure of seeing him perform at the Folley Theater in KC in '99, shortly after he beat cancer. What a talented musician. DW
