Estate Collection
Posted by ItchinToRide on Friday, May 8, 2020 2:25 PM

Hello all,

Am looking for advice on finding a good home for the collection of scale models comprising the estate of my wife's brother who passed away last month.  He lived in Vancouver, Washington.  Most of the models are plastic, but a few are die-cast.  They are are all in very good or excellent condition.

  • European race/sport cars (Ferrari, Bugatti, etc.).
  • European race/sport motorcycles (almost all Ducati, and a Norton or two if I recall correctly).
  • Three or four WWII fighters.

As mentioned above, finding a good home is the priority - not real concerned about $$$.

Any advice will be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Check out IPMS USA.ORG , IPMS google search will get you there. On that site they have links to donate to various organizations. They also have contact information for the local IPMS chapter in that region, I believe Portland Or. Will be closer than the Seattle one. Deans Hobbystop in Michigan buys estate sale kits however I do not know how much he gives. Good luck.

Welcome to the forum!

How many models did he leave behind?  That may have an impact on finding a home for them.

For any military models, I recommend looking for veterans' organizations, like American Legion or VFW posts; or museums.  You can ask them if they would be interested in having such models.

For the car models, I'd also look for any transportation museums in your area.  For example, here in the Lehigh Valley, we have a transportation museum, called America On Wheels.  They've got permanent displays, and they have also hosted some model car shows.

I'd look for car dealerships, too, for the brands of any models.  They might like to have models that they could display.

Another option is to look for model clubs in your area, whether IPMS or unaffiliated, and see if any members would be interested in taking any of them.  Or members might know someone or some other organizations that might be interested in taking them.

You might also ask at local schools or libraries.

Failing any of that, you might consider just auctioning off the collection.  For the die-cast models, especially, there are collectors out there, who might be interested.

Hope that helps!

Aha! - there is an IPMS chapter in my area, and I went ahead and joined the organization.  Thanks!
