As our collective good friend GMorrison says, "Modeling is an excuse to buy books". Well folks, there is a new one out there most definitely worth really looking at.

TOTAL UNDERSEA WAR, by another good friend of mine, Aaron Hamilton, is an absolutely 'loaded' piece on snorkel systems development and other late war German submarine technology.  This is not just a follow-on to his excellent U-1105 - Black Panther, though it contains some of that data stream on accoustic camouflage. It also contains a fastinating case study on the demise of U-869, made famous in Robert Kurson's book, SHADOW DIVERS.

If you are at all into U-Boats, you need this book. Check it out.

"Why do I do this? Because the money's good, the scenery changes and they let me use explosives, okay?"

Thanks for the recco.

Shadow Divers was a good book. My younger sister is a diver, although not at anywhere near those depths. She gave that book a big thumbs up, although it disturbed her in parts.

Interesting to envision a sunken U Boat. Mind gives an image of something way down there. But 869 is at a depth less than it's length and still a difficult dive.

Now I want to read Hamilton's take on why it was lost.

Actually, after he read my book on diving the ARIZONA, he contacted me and bounced a few ideas off on that particular subject. When I read Shadow Divers, I wasn't on board with the original proposed theory on how U-869 went down. There were just too many inconsistancies between the theory and the conditions of and around the wreck.

And as far as your statement goes, it should be "Life is an excuse to buy books".

I love books; not just because i'm a writer, but I love the 'hold it in your hands' format. It's not just the information .  .  . it goes far beyond that.

I can't seem to find who originally said it, but I've always liked the quote;

"If you would be right, read."

"Why do I do this? Because the money's good, the scenery changes and they let me use explosives, okay?"
