Duz Anyone Know?
Posted by Tanker-Builder on Sunday, November 8, 2020 8:42 AM

1972 Chevy makes a new truck;

      Ford keeps building theirs. Why was the Ford in this case somewhat more popular with some folks? Was it the Drive Trains? The Creature comforts, Or something that many didn't notice.

      Funny though, this was very obvious!

My brother always had Ford F-150's. His last one was a King Ranch Lariat. It had a saddle leather interior. The truck could carry his camper topper and pull a two-horse trailer up and down the hills and trails in western Montana, when he would go hunting or fishing. I think the truck had a V-10 engine.

OK. In the stash: Way too much to build in one lifetime...

Crown; That's fine. I switched some years back for a G.M.C. 2500 Diesel Crew Cab, Long Bed for my Fifth Wheel! It just seemed to Perform better and Ride smoother with the Coach attached!

Okay Guys. You came so close too!

     Think Back. What was the most odd thing about G.M. Trucks in the 70s. The Doors were four pieces versus Ford's two Piece doors. What happend when your four piece door gets slammed continually ( Folks slam Pickup Doors even when they don't have too) and the vehicle sits in the weather and gradually succumbs to the vagaries of one particular thing, Rust!

      This rust causes a weakness in the door because of the weight of the window glass within that frame. It then over time cracks and breaks at the Weld in the lower door. Wind noise and leaks are the result. I have seen this personally with the many trucks from the city that rotated through our Body Shop!

      Never the FORDS ! only the G.M. trucks( G.M.C. and Chevy.) This includes what is called the Suburbans as well. This holds true today. The smaller Chryslers, Kia,Toyota and others have four piece doors. The things get out of alignment in about two years.

Overseas we had a couple vehicles we called carryalls.  I'm pretty sure they were chevys and they were rattle traps.  they took the unpaved roads on the base with no problem but it was a shaky, dusty ride that fortunately lasted only for a short timne between stops.

Stateside we drove Chevy fleet side p/us that were great and lasted for the length of their alloted amount of funding and then sold off.

I owned one of the first years of F-150 Supercabs with its formed camper shell.  With its 155 inch wheel base it was a smooth thing to drive.  I miss it.
