Cops and Donuts
Posted by Tanker-Builder on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 2:48 PM

Okay where did this start?

      Years ago there were no fast food restaurants. But the corner Deli made doughnuts at the wee hours of the morning. Cops in Patrol units didn't have the time to stop and eat often. Just placed an order or had it set in front of you and up and at them you were.

     Eat on shift ? Nah? Now you could get doughnuts and coffee to tide you over. This became a symbol of Cops without a call to respond to. Get two coffees and some Doughnuts to go. Eat in the car and so on. Many years later the Sergeant at the desk is a Sour-Puss. Why? Well after all those years of many missed meals filled in with the offending Round bread products and Who knows what Coffee formula, he's dealing with G.E.R.D and High Cholesterol!

 Now the younger generation of Cops has Mickey "D's and " B " King " etc. Good Deep Fried food that settles where? The Middle. It's a daily fight for a cop to stay in shape.

 Enter the night shift. In some towns the doughnut shops are the only ones open 24-7. The rest shut down at 10 and re-open at 7. So what's a pair of or single law enforcement officers to do? Hit the Donut shop. My take on this is this. Unless you enjoy missing meals because of some jerk ( Male or Female) causing problems that make you miss a meal or two as a daily thing, don't be a cop. Because when you hit the donut shop you get made fun off!

Well, I've been in since 1987 and have yet to eat a donut while working.  I'll swill coffee the entire watch but have never had any interest in donuts.  Actually, I can't remember working with anyone who did.  Now, breakfast burritos...  Chef

Simple solution for officers and people like myself that are on the road for several hours a day.  As a salesman my second office is the car.  Pack a lunch.  Bring plenty of healthy snacks and bottled water.  Time off is a different story.  I can't resist the siren song of pizza and beer when I have a couple days off.

I retired 16 years ago from the Sheriffs Office and I can honestly say that I never saw any ‘cop and donut‘ thing in the entire 30 years of working patrol in 3 different sub stations covering different parts of a huge county, and 5 different detective bureau assignments. As for me I will rarely eat one, not crazy about clogging up my arteries.

Aw C'mon;

 Now you must understand.This comes out of two places mainly.well, three. New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles. Where it started exactly,I am not sure. I don't believe in five years as an Auxiliary( Volunteer, Armed) Traffic patrol for my city.I ever saw anyone of the officers do this ,True.

 But we sure got told many times " Go suck on a donut, Fuzz" When we handed them their tickets and wished them a Good day.
