Forum ads
Posted by Don Stauffer on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 8:31 AM

I do not object to most of the ads now showing up in the forum.  I want FSM to stay in business, and if that is what it takes, then so be it.

However, I hate the ad at the bottom of the page.  After it pops up, it covers part of the window space when I am replying or creating a message.  I try to X it out but it keeps on popping up.  Someone needs to reformat so that it comes below the compose window, not over it!

When it gets too annoying,I switch over to my Adblocker browser,it's really effective.

Couldn't agree more. Because the ad expands and contracts I frequently open it by mistake trying to X it out but missing the moving target. If you ask me an ad blocker shouldn't be necessary.

On today's internet, I find Adblocker a virtual necessity. Hence I have yet to experience the popup you describe.

Adblocker here as well.  I understand the reason behind the ads, but when they interfere with the normal function of a given web-site, they become self-defeating.  It would be really easy to make it so the ads stay to the side and don't have animation in them, so when that isn't done, I really don't feel like I have much choice but to block them all.

That's a great point.

I worked in the advertising industry for a decade, so I know how advertising works. I know about revenue streams...and that no site, however excellent, is providing content simply because they love us.

Because of that...every site that I frequent with any regularity (including this one), I'm signed up to get their email solicitations, and I'm happy to actually look at them. But particularly on a phone, stuff popping up mid-screen and blocking what I'm trying to look at is just a PITA...and I won't bother even looking at those sorts of ads, much less buying anything from them...pretty much just out of spite and/or simple annoyance.

(Plus...is it just me?...but when you hit that little X in the corner to lose the popup, it often seems to take 3 or 4 hits before the blasted thing will actually disappear.)

I have noticed that too, along with the so-called "Ad Choices" icon a lot of them have which make you think that you're actually having a say in what ads are displayed.  It works for about a week, and then you start seeing the same garbage showing up.

I can honestly say that I have never once bought a single item being promoted through a pop-up ad.  They're like those Comcast and Century Link guys that hang out in the electronics section of Walmart and demand your attention...not ever buying anything from those guys either.  I just lock eyes with them and cut them off with a "No thank you" and go on my way.  Many other times, I take a detour to avoid that area of the store altogether, which I think defeats the purpose of the various floor displays Walmart has to try to get people to buy their merchandise.  They're being stepped on by another company that is taking up space in their store.

I find things getting worse.  Now, occasionally the ad in the left border is larger than the border area, covering up substantial area of the post.  The bottom continues to do this, including operating the buttons for replying to the post.

I had to install ad blocker to be able to use this site reasonably. There used to be an ad along the right hand side that had a lime green block that strobed and I couldn't take the flashing.

Hey; Greg!

How about over ten hits before it goes away? Ever done that? I had one of those just the other day.

Another thing that is disturbing- almost every time a new ad appears, it seems to shift the vertical position of the posts.  I go  to click on a button but as I am clicking the screen shifts and I don't get the option.  This is particuly the case for that ad between the menu banner and the URL path.  I go to click on say, modeling subjects, but the FSM ad suddenly appears and the URL path jumps down the screen and I click on some ad instead.

I am not opposed to ads- I know it helps keep Kalmbach in business, but more care needs to be taken on their mechanics.

The "x" also seems to appear in different places randomly, sometines after the add has played out...ANNOYING!! The other issue I have is I will accidentally fat finger the "x" and open the add, I find the close "x " and the damn thing asks " why not this add?" Of course BECAUSE I DON'T NEED YOUR PRODUCT never shows up.

I makes me think that it may be an AI algorithm running to target me exclusively with stuff I don't want or need.

Yes I should install an ad blocker however my "tech expertise" is not up to par with my age group....or even you fellas who are older than me.

The small one at the bottom of my phone screen, while annoying, is fine.  When it crawls all around the edge and a 1/4" wide, and won't let me open a thread, that's a bit much.  Lasts until I either "x" it off, or it disappears on it's own.

I installed AdBlocker about ten days ago.  Worked fine, but today I got a message that I have to renew it.  Does AB only last ten days!  Will they require me to go to a paid version?

Don

I went to the Apple App Store in my phone and tablet and got them for free. Be careful that it’s not a fake email trying to get your cc number. Yesterday I got a recorded message from Amazon wanting to verify a purchase. Googled the provided number and is not an Amazon customer support number. More google shows it reported as a scam call.

As I recall, after 10 days you'll get a browser tab that pops up asking for a one-time donation.  You can elect not to donate, after which it will just continue to give you that pop up browser tab every 10 days.  I donated the suggested amount and haven't had it pop up since.

Are you guys talking about ads on your phone or on your PC? The only ads that I get on my PC are along the right side and they are statis ads. I do not have adblocker.

Your comments and questions are always welcome.
