Wilbur Wright

I'm not on Facebook, and don't want to be.

I agreed with you 100%! As a retired computer systems professional, I stay away from Facebook and the other "Social Media" outlets, their security is lousy and they track everything you say and do, in addition, they censor content that they do not agreed with. They are NOT fans of free speech!

I suppose. Guess I'll just collect as many as I find. If anything goes dark I could do a group email or something?

Probably better to send out a group PM to those you want to stay in touch with in the future.  Kind of a lot of work for one person to be a clearing house and keep all of it.

Let me in on the loop! Whoever is collecting the email addresses, please PM me and I'll give you mine!

Might be a sign that FSM is in bigger dire straights than is thought by some.  Could be signs of furry creatures abandoning the vessel before they get wet.

I'll go along with LT, and put my email here for those who might want it for the future, weather or not this thing goes dark.  Once it does there won't be an opportunity to get info on contacting folk's.

Like LT, please don't bury me in other stuff.

Sorry, but you're whistling in the graveyard if you think 'angst' isn't warranted. They cancelled the auto mag with no warning. This mag got a major issue reduction. With no warning or restitution but some extra digital floor sweepings as compensation.

Stick your head in the sand and plug your ears while shouting 'it'll never go away, it'll never go away, it'll never go away' as loud as you can. The facts say otherwise - print is dying. Forums are dying. FSM's subscriber base and advertising income have dwindled  greatly. Gee, I wonder what comes next?

Well, Elizabeth Nash left the company.  Do you think that's one more sign that the forum is going away?

I'm fairly easy to find because of the unique last name and I use my real name most of the time. I've had the same email since 1998 or 99.

I have a facebook accoiunt.  I only use it to see a coiuple things that cetain members of my club or the IPMSUK SIG post from time to time .  I have tried to get rid of it inthe past and coiuldn't, I think I'm stuck with it.  They keep sending me the amount of notices I have waiting, whichi is a goodsize number and now they are notifying me of various groups they think I might want to join.

It's so nice to know that someone is out there, somewhere, beneath teh pale moonlight, looking out for you...and looking at you.

you should use that account to check out/join The Plastic Posse, The Mediocre Modelers and SMCG groups!  Those are the three I see that seem to be most active.  And don't forget to like and follow 'Ryan's Random Modelwerks' too!

While I agree with MTB, you might be right, at least from some of FSM staff.

In the forum glitch/problem page, Tim went back and made a list of problems since the last major update in 2015, and sent to the IT gurus.

Remains to be seen how much improvement comes from it and for how long.

For some reason, FSM staff has not weighed in on any of these threads to either squelch or verify.  Based on past history of the company, it makes sense, at least to me, to have a backup plan in place.

Oh yeah, I don't do or have any interest in Facebook or other social media platforms.

But recently there is a spirit of angst in too many posts in this forum, and I think that fear is unfounded.

Unless the Administration publicly says otherwise, those fears will always be a concern.

True, anything is possible.  It just seems that there is an unnecessary amount of hand-wringing now.  I don't think the change in the number of hardcopy issues is a sign that the forum is going away, that's all.

Baron and Greg, agree but don't hurt to look ahead

Oh, I agree, generally, about being prepared.  I was a Boy Scout.  And let's remove any context about the forum's demise from the discussion-contacting each other outside the forum is a nice idea.  People who live near to each other can arrange meetups or other in-person events.

Of course, we can do that now, and there is some of that kind of contact, when we talk about our local clubs, or shows-"Who's going to MosquitoCon/AMPS/Nationals?" etc.

I totally understand the avoidance of Facebook, but, surprisingly, it is easy to filter a lot of stuff out.  I have pretty much eliminated the nonsense on my own personal page, and my feed is almost entirely posts from modeling groups.

couple things I like about facebook: the simplicity.

You simply post and scroll. Comment if you like, but, you can also click the like button to acknowlede that you saw the post and enjoyed what you saw.

(this one is my favorite) there is no need to host your photos elsewhere.  You can share them right from the device you took them with!

access to so many amazing modeler's work, from all over the world.there are numerous groups

And many, many amazing modelers displaying their talents.

it's mobile AND desktop friendly.  I don't use a "traditional" computer, and this forum can be clunky to use at times, especially when trying to add photos.

I can respect the lack Of desire to try/use Facebook, as it does seem that the average age here on the forums is in the mid sixties (and I don't mean that in a disrespectful way....I'm no spring chicken either).  How about a discord channel?  Discord, I think, is sort of like a hybrid between the forums and Facebook, and you can choose to keep it as public/private as you like....

The idea of a database is a good idea. I used to be on Facebook, but I recently canceled my membership. It became to creepy.

Your comments and questions are always welcome.

Baron and Greg, agree but don't hurt to look ahead

Sure doesn't, and the original idea about somebody creating a list of members just in case makes good sense to me.

Posting here on FSM about starting another group elsewhere, not so much. But that's just my opinion.

I still say that it is very premature to think that this forum is going away.

I agree.

And FWIW, I watched my favorite photography forum self-destruct some years back and it all started with PMs and backdoor chatter (even amongst moderators in the private chats rooms). Backstabbing and stuff. Took several years, but the forum finally folded.

The beginning of the end was when a sizable number of members left to form their own facebook group. They were good folk, the facebook bunch became a clique and mostly stopped in the original forum occasionally to toss out jabs. It was a sad thing to watch.

This converstation is different, no backstabbing, it's just an upfront concern over losing contact with each other (and I'd be sad if that happened too).

I guess what I'm trying to say is I hope we don't inadvertantly create a self-fulfilling prophecy here.

I agree Eagle, I was working away from home and my wife set us up on facebook to " face time". Never used that feature, and 2yrs after I returned home I was still deleting " friend requests" from people I NEVER met. Volatile situation for a guy like me.

I know a few people here above just forum interaction, and know how to keep in touch with them. However the many others here would be missed as the knowledge base is so much friendlier than google. I'm onboard until whatever happens......after that I'll end up playing catch up, the good thing is most of you will remember me, hopefully, so re intergrating won't be as painful.

we're modelers it's what we do

I'm registered on MSW, Modelwarships,  Hyperscale and Britmodeler, but FSM has always seemed to be the most diverse site, which is why I probably had over 3000 posts here.

I have visted the SPA site a few times.

Facebook, it seems it is hard to navigate past posts since it runs in realtime.

I’ve been here since 08 and will miss this site if it ever goes down. I have met personally several members at Modelpalooza  and communicated long distances thru emails with others, some have passed and didn’t get the chance to meet.  I do hope we can maintain our modeling community.

I know FSM does not want  a trader/seller section for members. Other sites have them and I had great success finding parts, etc. at more than fair prices unlike price gauging sites like eBay and their fees.

No social media here either.  Just a comment on Facebook:  The "cool" thing about joining Facebook is that you won't even have to share your contact info with people you want to have contact with on there, Facebook will do that for you.  They will actually invade the contact list of the e-mail you used to sign up and make contact with every person on your contact list that's on Facebook...without your knowledge or consent.  Isn't that great?! Oops

On another note, security clearances shouldn't be mentioned on public forums...just sayin'.

I don't go on any social media except this forum.  I did check out SPAModeler but haven't signed on. As GH said, I too recognized a few names from here. Seems to be a good place to go in case.
