Time to Watch Gettysburg Today

Yeah, I noticed that too.  It was strange since Turner had a good bit to do with making it.

At least I got to see 1776 this year.

I did break out my 5th Dimension CD and played the song The Declaration.

It's a shame that no network runs it around 4th of July,initially TBS used to run it every year but no more.Probably would offend too many people nowadays.

I enjoyed Gettesburg when it came out.  I have the soundtrack fo rit and eventually picked up the DVD.

It was interesting to see what they had to do forf the movie.  They had a small army of re-enactors on hand at all times.  These people would stay as long as possible, even living in their period tents and as some would leave, others were there to take their place.  Great care had to be taken since they were on the battlefield, plaques and monuments covered or even moved and then returned to their original place and condition, unbelieveable amount of work and care.

Real doubtful; Gettysburg went fairly well, but Gods and Generals outright screwed the reenactors. From my understanding, they were not particularly compensated for their travel, expenditures, or powder, which hit the artillery guys pretty hard. Apparently they were expected to participate out of 'patriotism' or 'for the fun of it', which frankly doesn't feed the bulldog. Meanwhile, the big actors were making bank. After G&G, most of the reenactors told management to pack sand on the subject of Last Full Measure.

I would love to see The Last Full Measure coming out. Unfortunately, I doubt we'll see it. 

Funny, I'm an Australian and yet I have a passionate interest in the ACW and the Confederacy in particular. I don't understand it, I just enjoy it. Gettysburg and God's and Generals are two of my favourite movies.

America and Australia have many similarities in the 1800's, gold rushes, vast, open swathes of wild country, bandits and remote access to the 'authorities'. Similar weapons, colts, shotguns  and winchesters were much used here, although so were British manufactured firearms. We too had stagecoaches.

America had a civil war, gunfighters and mounted, organised resistance from its native peoples. We had rebellions, bushrangers and a much less agressive, non mounted native people. 

We also had huge ranches and cattle drives, boundry riders and skilled horsemen, black and white, but no Goodnight/Loving trail, massive westward expansion or herd cutters. Many similarities, some significant differences. No Hollywood either. And the latter is not meant to be be a smart aleck comment.

Gettysburg was my weekend movie choice in two parts ... half on Friday, half last night.

And reading the book "Killer Angels" to go with it.  

Great movie, now I feel the need to watch Glory again.

Sounds great, but honestly, who did the better Robert E. Lee, Martin Sheen or Robert Duvall? (I'd go with Duvall.)

And, Frankly, Stephen Lang did a far better George Picket than he did 'Stonewall' Jackson. 

OR, keep Lang as Jackson and put Matthew McConaughey as Picket. That would have been interesting.

Yes, I'm mixing Gettysburg with Gods and Generals.

Watching Gettysburg is a tradition at our house too!(I'm the only one who watches it)  I like to spread it out over two days.  I still rememember taking my 5th grade class to the theater when it first came out.(they used a lot of Wisconsin reenacters)  I also remember visiting Gettysburg as a kid with my family.
