Most of them do look like craters.  If you look at some photos of the Normandy landing areas, there are many craters that are very visible still today.

The wife and I visited Pointe du Hoc in Normandy 3-4 years ago and it has plenty of HUGE craters from both Naval gunfire and aerial bombardment.

When I visited Budapest during my R&R weekend in the Balkans, there were many areas of that city showing battle damage from both WWII and the 1956 Uprising. It's pretty easy to spot such old damage when you know what the fresh stuff looks like.
The airfield photo reminds me of one of the photos in Cornelius Ryan's book "A Bridge Too Far". During Dutch aerial photo mapping of the Netherlands in the 60's for airline navigation purposes, there were ghost images of gliders in the ground on their old LZ's. The had been burned in place after landing during the battle and scarred the ground below. When compared with wartime photos of the LZ's full of gliders immediately after landing, the original craft were easily located compared to the surrounding terrain.

F is for FIRE, That burns down the whole town!

U is for URANIUM... BOMBS!

N is for NO SURVIVORS...

It wouldn't surprise me, you can still see the craters from the WW1 battlefields.

I don’t know for sure, but it wouldn’t surprise me.  I grew up in New Guinea, and spent a lot of time in Lae, Madang,  and Rabaul.  Lots of reminders of war, but also a lot of stories and memories.  I truly love that country and it’s people.

Is it just me or are there a bunch of 80 year old bomb craters at the edge of the runway?

Stuff like this always give me goose pimples...
