This is about Models okay!
Just not the ones you normally think of. Boats, Planes, Cars(Tons of those) Construction Equipment, Science Fiction, Undersea, ad infinitem. What company put these kits out? Why is a product that's been around since 1953 still adhering to and delivering the same Quality that they started with. How do they do that?
Okay, they also do Buildings and other things too. Yes!! I speak of the ubitiqous LEGO! "Bricks"?, you say: Tis true, But in a non bid for the Guiness Book of world Records, LEGO manufactures more Vehicle Tires than any other company in the world! They have that many Vehicles out there too! From Race cars all the way to Garbage Trucks! No LEGO does NOT do Military and I doubt they ever will! The Brick Buyers in a Back door thing do. These folks are Called AFOLS or "Adult Fans of LEGO".
The Largest Model of the Yamato was built of LEGO. Many of the Chinese Knock off companies do militaria as well as an American company that started that way and now they don't do much in the military world anymore. LEGO is unique in one regard. Architects have used it juct like they used Balsa, Foamboard and Sheet plastic from Evergreen and Plastruct. That's how the latter two started. Making stuff for Model railroaders and eventually being milked by The Architectural and Engineering firms to build their models where required by the contract.
Hey! this stuff can be done in LEGO as well. the Company has responded with as many shapes and connectors, windows, doors and so on that I can think of. Oh! working on the, Idea of say a Floating drydock for Your Trumpeter, Hasegawa, or Tamiya's IOWA class Ship in 1/200? The best looking one I have seen to date had it's core built of LEGO! Plus, with Lego you can have opening Gates that are not so delicate they break, but still get the idea across.
Funny thing about this ubitiqouis toy though. It has crossed over into many Trades and Cultures than any product out there. AAaand !!! They have NEVER let up on one thing that is their unique saving grace as well. You can use them inside and outside with impunity and the absolutely AMAZING QUALITY!!! is as evident in a 40 year old pile of these things as well as a pile bought yesterday. Why can't the others, Revell, AMT, Tamiya, Trumpeter, Hasegawa, etc .get on THAT bandwagon? I would more willing to pay today's or even tomorrow's prices if they had that kind of quality down pat!
I can't help but be amazed at the reaction of a Community when the rumor becomes reality and a New LEGO store opens! It's as bad as either the Theatrical Oscars or a Pink Flloyd Concert! The Line starts forming then ultimate pandemonium when the doors open. I sometimes wonder how many of each set they have in stock fo that day! I have seen many times where an easy thousand Dollars worth of product has walked out their doors on an average day!! How often can you say that about the average hobby outlet that sells ONLY Plastic KITS!
So, to close. Don't ignore these darned things your kids leave on the floor to trap you. Join in and find out how much they can be of use to you. I use a mixed bag for paint stands, YES, turntables too! and Building Supports for the models of Cars and Ships I work on!. So welcome the most useful Toy(Er, Tool) into your home as well. You will find it's use incredible in so many ways. I have even used it to make Dams. For Mold media so I could build a Silicon Mold of something and the container the mold was built in? LEGO! Bye, T.B.
