Not Welcome Anymore?
Posted by Tanker-Builder on Thursday, May 16, 2024 2:11 PM

This post is for everyone!

I get the feeling sometimes that my comments and presence are no longer welcome here! I don't know if it's because I am long winded sometimes or that I do not post photos like everyone else. It's a feeling generated by comments made after I post something!

If ya'll rather I can just lurk and not say a blasted thing! I am not, at 81 going to use my slim funds to buy a camera I cannot afford just to post photos on a site i have to pay for and then post here. Yes, I do get wordy sometimes, I admit that. When trying to get a tip or idea across I may go overboard a bit. I mean c'mon who doesn't. Remember, while some of you were still a gleam in Dad's eye, I was doing models of sticks and paper, and sometimes only paper!

Don't think for one minute that I am just a bit of hot wind blowing across the site. I earned my Creds in the courts of this land not in model contests! I chose not to compete because we were moving around a lot and it was hard to preserve a model under construction for long. I have done so when we were in a place for a while. Just check the History of Central Arkansas Modelers Society! (it has changed names now). I was one of the Founders and early Officers. I competed within the club, because I was too busy with Court and Architectural models to do much else!

If you read about oil spills on the west coast from some years back you will run across this name, Clean Bay, inc. Well, they had ten Vessels total and I was contracted to build all ten including the last one which hadn't even been finished yet!Plus a detailed Semi-Cutaway Cape Class C.G .Cutter to be presented to the retiring  member of their original founding Group.

Don't get me wrong, I like being here and sharing with you all. If you want that to stop, just tell me and I will go away. You are my only Lifeline to the Modeling world, Without you I will just build and not give a darned who cares what it is or what experience I had learning that tip or technique.

I have asked before for your understanding and courtesy while I not only share but, deal with problems I wouldn't wish on anyone else. Can you give me that? Thank You For reading This, and great modeling. T.B.

TB, I for one am not one to say who is welcome or not welcome on this site. I am not a moderator here. As far as reading your posts or not, and then answering or not to those posts, I will say that your writing style tends to lose me after a paragraph or two. I understand your enthusiasm behind your subject matter and your tips or advice, but most are outside my wheelhouse. When I do read something of yours where I feel that I can make a meaningful contribution, I will post one.

As far as posting photos goes, if you have a smart phone with a camera, you can take photos. A separate camera is obsolete for most non professional modeling purposes. There are free image hosting sites like Postimage that will store your photos to post on here. No need to spend money on either a camera, or on a image hosting service.

I think that your presence here is one of the unique aspects of this site. You certainly do have an extended lifetime of  experience to share here.

No problem with your postings,sometimes I read,sometimes I dont,sometimes I comment on them,sometimes I dont.They certainly aren't offensive,so I don't know why anyone would make feel unwanted.

Ditto. And certainly, the bugginess of this website is not helping any of us. Please consider that as well.

And to what Stik said about a camera phone, AMEN. It's been months since I used a dedicated camera. My phone does a very good job. It amazes me the range of focus that it offers.

I agree as well. You are welcome to post where and when and how much you want to. No one will complain. We can read, reply or just scroll on by.

I will point out that the more recent hiccups the site has been having an adverse effect on my participation. If I click on my bookmark to pull up the site and i get the blank error page, I'm more likely to just not visit the site that day.

There are probably lurkers who are having the same issues and just go on to another site.

While you are free to post your heart's desire, do you want some constructive criticisms on your posts in general?

Posting in a forum is akin to having a conversation at work, school or amongst friends. You kind of want to hit on a topic that is pertinent and of general or specific interest to the group in which you are wanting to spark a conversation.

My wife has an issue with conversations. When you talk to her, it's like trying to get a sip of water from a fire hose. She has no "off switch" and is always on "blast".

I've seen people in conversations with her trying to get a word in edgewise, just waiting for her to pause or take a breath, but to no avail.

I've tried subtly giving her hints to allow others to speak and not so subtle hints, i.e. "Honey, take a breath, let someone else speak!"

She doesn't take constructive criticism at all and gets very defensive. She blames her social clumsiness on being stuck at home with children since she graduated from high school 40 years ago. She's rarely had the opportunity to interact with other adults beyond parents watching kids.

I tend to think that she just can't read the room and has no filter.

Everybody has their own interests and their own style of participation on a forum.  If a topic interests me, I might participate in it, if I'm not saying something that somebody else has already said.  I guess when it comes down to it, I have a pretty limited scope of modeling subjects that I'm into...mostly Cold War military aircraft.  Not really into armor, or ships at all, so I tend not to participate in those topics.  I mostly tend to gravitate toward the "nuts and bolts" of modeling kind of topics, offering input when a specific question is asked.  Never really been much into making threads that offer unsolicited advice or participating in threads like that though.  I've just always been about going my own way and not necessarily following along with how others do things, and as such, I think of other modellers having a similar mindset.  Sometimes I'll start a build thread or something like that with the understanding that nobody is under any obligation to be interested in what I'm posting.  If I see view counts go up, that's good enough for me.  That means that there is some interest.

Eugene!

That was a Blast!. I get asked to modify passenger cars and stuff by fellow modelers who are afraid to take that step! So, what's next? T.B.

Not sure , during the summer months I don't do much model building unless I find something really cool!

Not sure where this is coming from.  I've rarely seen negative feedback regarding your posts.  Are you getting PMs pushing you to leave?  If the metric is response and interaction then we are all in the same boat TB.   I've seen nice builds get posted - with pics ;) - and get 1000 views and < 10 responses.  It's the nature of the forum.  And as others have indicated, the site has techincal issues that have prevented most interactions recently.

Post up and carry on.

Thanks,

John

Hi TB!

When I post, if someone replys that's great. If no one replys so what. They're either not interested or otherwise occupied. I've learned quite a bit from your posts and I hope to learn more. So, stick around TB, I'm sure there are quite a few guys out there that think the same way.

stay safe.

TB, at this point I am gonna say now that eight forum members took the time and made the effort to reply to your post. Yet you only responded to one of them. If you expect folks to interact with you, and as a matter of common courtesy, you should respond to more of them.

Eugene:

How could I not? It's a model ain't it? Besides, I do a lot of train stuff for other folks anyway. Train friends that is. They run the trains, but they are afraid to take a saw or X-Acto to them. They do good Scenics , but they don't know how to do mechanical type stuff!    T.B.

I have the Armor Forum saved as my primary entry into the site. But, if that doesn't work, I use a link to one of my old posts from ages ago. It often works but on ocassion won't let me into other areas at all. If that happens, I just hang up my spurs for the day and will try again tomorrow.

I normally do not have the chance to surf the web until after 12:30-1 am and am usually tired from a long, 12 hour day. A hiccupping site isn't worth the effort if I can't get in from the front door.
