Getting Closer
Posted by jetmaker on Saturday, April 11, 2015 11:06 PM

Okay, I have all of my components in place. I went through three different plastic containers to finally find the right one. It all came together when I finally decided on scale. Yep, I had not quite reconciled that yet. I had intended to build small scale (1/72 and smaller A/C, and 1/48 and small AFVs) because of space-saving concerns. But, there is ample room in the house, and after discussing it with my parents, they encouraged me to build 1/48 and 1/35 (A/C and AFVs, respectively). They adorn the house with art from my siblings and close relatives, which they are very fond of, and they assured me that they take pride in their kids' creations and would be proud to display my models. Plus, they also love military miniatures, which is very cool, and there's some great spots here to show off some planes and tanks. I'm very relieved to have this resolved, because, though I deeply admire the work of 72nd scale modelers, I don't believe I would get the satisfaction I'm seeking from them. They're just too small for me - however, that does not apply to larger things, like I'm not going to build a 1/48 B-52 or B-1, or a 1/35 Atomic Annie or Dora, that would take up half my friggen room!

So, I'm almost up and running...

Oh, I also picked up a new cutting mat - a bigger one, woohoo! It's 18" x 24", which should cover everything I plan to build - except if I decide to try something like the aforementioned giants (in 72nd scale, not 48 and 35!), in that case I would probably set up a temporary work table in a utility room downstairs and try to throw paint at it in the garage. The container I decided on for my booth is approximately 25" wide and 17.5" tall, and about 17" deep, so it's plenty adequate for all the non-BUFF-type stuff I want to do

I'm going to start off very simple and finish the M113 that I started. It's going to have no interior and will be all buttoned up. I'm going for a very simple build to get my most basic assembly and painting skills going. After that, I have a 1/48 Tamiya Spitfire Mk.I to get me started on the A/C

That's about it for now. Should be posting some pics in a week or two. The anticipation is killing me!

Sounds like you have everything planned. Hope to see some of you pics soon.

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

So, I made a mock up of the booth, using a cardboard box with the same exact dimensions - actually, a half-inch larger - and a furnace filter. I also ran some flexible aluminum duct out the window. I sprayed a massive amount of Tamiya primer from a rattle can. I sprayed super aggressively - about three times as much and as fast as I would on any one model. It pulled everything outside like a champ! Within five minutes I couldn't even detect a faint vapor smell with my face up inside the box!!

By next weekend, I'll have the booth installed and operational. Then it's go time!!! I love it when a plan comes together
