If its the bird I think it is, it's a G model that was used in the second "Memphis Belle" movie, which by the way, resembled the first movie about as much as the Wright flyer resembles the SR-71.

Yep, that was a rep; the real item hasn't flown since it got to Memphis permanently sometime after the war. I wish it could fly again, what a sight that would be!

They're in the process of restoring her now. She's in a hangar in Millington, a little town just north of Memphis. This is the website and they have a link showing what parts they need.

I believe I saw a program on the Belle when she was in really rough shape. I think it was save our history. The history channel showed over a year ago. mississippivol, has the Belle been restored yet?

I love the Belle and I, like many others, will see her in person one day. I would like also to meet her pilot Col. Morgan. I grew up around aircraft, my father being a crew chief on T-6s, T-Birds(T-33), Dueces, Huns, Sixes and the F-4. Two years ago I was going through some negatives at my mom's house. They had belonged to my uncle he had recently died and most of the pics and negs. were given to my mom. While browsing I came across 4 B-17 shots taken at Detroit city airport. In one negative there was something just to familiar about that pattern on the wheel. My goodness I yelled this is the Belle. I was almost crying. My mom says oh didn't I ever tell you about that. I was almost 47 at the time and i told my mom I think for my interest in anything aviation I would have remembered that. The Belle had stopped in Detroit as part of her War Bond tour. I had those printed and 2 of them will make great 8x10s or larger when I get the money. Our local specialty shop charges an arm and a leg for by hand printing of old negs. When printed this year I would love to have them autographed by Col Morgan if possible.

I was also impressed with the FSM article. Been planning to build Hasegawa's version for a while; it's on my stack of "to-do" projects. Memphis Belle was my first B-17 kit back in the 60's (the old Revell). Interesting (and sad) to hear that she doesn't have a permanent home yet. Anyone read Robert Morgan's autobiography: "The Man Who Flew the Memphis Belle"? It's a good read, and gives a lot of background, plus the later lives of the crew.

The Liberator did carry more bombs and flew farther but the B-17 is the most unassailably cool aircraft of the war. IMHO. I have about 2 hours of "stick time" in a B-17. I can die happy now.Big Smile [:D]Bow [bow]

i think the B-17 is a swell plane, but the B-24 was a real workhorse. Bow [bow]

The B-17 is on my wish list, but being model car mad it may never get off the list.

2cam16, what blue, or blue mix did you use on the Eaton's Yale Escort? Do you have any other photo's of it?

ah, the Belle. I remember seeing the movie and knowing that the B-17 would be an obsession for me. Man, i wish i could see her in person. The last time a B-17 was in the philippines was during WWII! Sigh [sigh] Update us when she finally settles down, okay?

Very glad to see an article about the plane I spent my childhood adoring

I have a feeling that I was probably the only kid my age with an autograph from JJ Quinlan Big Smile [:D]

Memphis Belle in FSM

I loved that article Mr Armour did for FSM. I live near Memphis and love the Belle. They finally moved it off of Mud Island(nearly impossible to visit more than once), and were going to build a place out east of town for her that was only 15 minutes from my house. I think Mr Armour's replica was going to be on display there when they got the new place finished, if I recall correctly. Alas, it ain't happenin', at least anytime soon. It's in a hangar at Millington Municipal airport awaiting a new home. Thankfully the public can still visit and the city of Millington is trying to keep it there. Hopefully, I'll get to see the Belle and Mr Armour's replica together someday.
