Quick build- a challenge to self
Posted by stikpusher on Friday, May 22, 2009 4:56 PM
This is kind of related to the "how many do you have" thread. I have taken a week off work to unwind a bit and when I can, indulge in this great hobby we share here. Over the past short while I have been thinking about trying to complete build a "simple" kit in that week... build, paint, decal, and weather... I often have several kits going at the same time in various stages of completion, but it seems they will take anywhere from one (the quickest build in recent memory) to several (six +) months to complete. I am not talking about a single day job like I used to do as a kid, but a proper build in a short time span. Anybody else ever think on and/or try this sort of build recently?

Yep, done a Group build on another board that the theme was 48 hours. From start to finish had to be done over a weekend. Unexpected things always seem to get in the way on those 48hrs. Started mine on a Saturday morning and finshed late Sunday afternoon. Pick your model wisely, something simple, and just get it done. I think there was one of these weekend builds here not to long ago. They crop up from time to time and are very fun! Oh yeah, heres what I finished with on mine:

Yes, I did see the weekend GBs when they happened. The two big things against it for me at the time was that I was working weekends then and I honestly dont feel I could do a kit in the time alloted. I can see you did a great job there John. Great work , and when I realize you did it in a weekend... wow!Bow [bow]

Well I am pretty much trying to decide between and AH-1J or AH-1S in 1/48.... Both are Fujimi kits and will be done in monotone color schemes, just a nice simple single cockpit for the interior, no wheels/wheel wells for complications...

If I need a "quick-build" fix, it'll be a wheeled vehicle or aircraft... But "quick" means no dio and very little weathering...  And "quick" is relative.. It'll still take 10-20 man-hours..

Well I selected the AH-1S and kicked it off earlier this evening. Cockpit is assembled along with the engine housing and the stub wings. Fit is nice and so far everything proceeding smoothely. I think this kit will fit the bill nicely.

I often have to stop what I'm building to make something for my 4 yr old. Right now I've got the Polar Lights Speed Racer Mach 5 about 50% complete and an Aoshima Keaton Batmobile waiting in the wings for us to build together. His assistance normally slows my building rate considerably.

I hear you Rob... my youngest is now 11 and she likes to build on her own now. Although she does require a bit of dad's help here and there. She has done a handfull of kits so far and I am introducing her to some basic airbrushing.

Well, here is a shot of everthing I have glued together so far on my Cobra. Painting of the interior is about to commence.

I am taking this one over to the Chopper forum as a WIP for anyoen who cares to watch teh progress...

Day 5, about 7-9 hours or so of actual work done... This was the perfect kit for a quick build.
