Hobby shop websites in Canada or NW U.S.?
Posted by dbear38 on Sunday, June 28, 2009 11:33 AM

Hi All

I live in Alberta, Canada and was wondering if anyone has found any decent hobby shop wesites in Canada or NW U.S.(ie Montana, N Dakota?). I have found one or two in Canada, but others haven't been updated for a few years or just show one or two models and then the rest is R/C or trains.

Ordering things from the southern and eastern U.S is just starting to get to costly. Postage is the same price as my order. I know I should wait to make one big order, but i'm at the point of just odds and ends. There is two small shops where I live, but they won't do special orders for some things i would like and there shops are more for R/C and Warcraft Gaming.

I'm looking for are paints, tools and some tips and tricks, maybe some groups to join. I'm mainly into aircraft and some armour and scifi.

Any help would be great and thanks.

Darren

dbear38, you must be one deprived cub! Shock [:O] Here's a partial list of what you're looking for in regards to Canadian hobby shop websites. I will post more when I find them.

British Columbia

Richmond - http://www.imperialhobbies.ca

Vancouver - http://www.hobbywave.com/ (For those into Gundam and similar genre)

Ontario

Hamilton - http://www.modellerschoice.com/

Mississauga - Northstar Hobbies http://www.northstarhobbies.com/ or http://www.militaryhobbies.ca/

Ottawa - Hobby Centre http://www.hobcen.com/

Ottawa - Hobby House (Their website is currently under construction, but they are excellent in terms of mail orders. Between Hobby Centre and Hobby House, this is my preferred place to shop.)

Thunder Bay - Flightdecs http://flightdecs.ca/ (Aftermarket military aircraft decals)

Quebec

Montreal - Udisco https://www.udisco.com/hobbies/index.htm (This is a warehouse of kits that you will spend hours looking around...trust me on this one...and you'll love the prices!)

Jagdwolf you have no idea how bad it's around hereBanged Head [banghead].Sometimes it feels like a modellers hell. You are the ultimate pack leader!!!Bow [bow] Thank you a tonne for the links. I have the one from Mississauga. That site is well done and I will check out the others right now.

On a side note. In my old job, I used to work in Northern Alberta, the nearest city or town or human was hours away. I had a pack of the most amazing wolves checking my assisstant and me out for a couple days. We could see them darting thru the bush or just watching us. It was just amazing. The day I did bring my camera with me they quit coming around.

Thanks again for the help and the links

Anytime, dbear38. Udisco is one warehouse you simply have to see whenever you visit Montreal. It's open to the public, and is multistorey. The several hobby shops that closed down in Montreal sold their remaining stocks to this company, hence why Udisco can pass them off at discount prices. Whereas you may find three or maybe four samples of a particular kit in most shops, you'll probably find at least ten, fifteen or more on the shelves. And they have a lot of kits, including quite a few OOP! Their website isn't updated that much, and some kits they have listed as not in stock, may be available. Best to ask to be sure. (Case in point: they had one kit I was looking for, but wasn't on the site. Like my namesake, I pounced! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg])

As for the local shops here in Ottawa - Discount Hobbies, Hobby Centre and Hobby House - I find HH is much better at getting kits than HC. The latter boasts it is the best hobby shop in Ottawa, but I don't think so. HH is well-known for its models, railroad and science kit fun, and doesn't pander to those shrill little dinks playing Warhammer or other similar games as HC does. (My game is BattleTech. Try teaching that to some of those kids, and their expressions tell you right off the bat their brains are coasting...) Discount Hobbies is more a R/C store with model kits and diecasts as a filler. I was hired on as part-time for a few years because the staff knew diddly squat about models. Even today, whenever I go in to pick up something, the staff will direct another customer to me for assistance. (Should really ask for a commssion on this...Wink [;)])

Anyhoo, hope you find what you're looking for. If not, and I can be of assistance, just let me know.

Best regards.

Thanks again Klaus

I even found an old Norseman aircraft I would like to make for an elderly gentleman here. The links are awesome and just what i'm looking for. I'll have to make a pilgrimage to Udisco here in the next year or so.

Cheers to you. Make a Toast [#toast]
