I want one of those old Sony's with the infra-red action that would let you see thru womens' clothing!! Bwaaah-ha-ha-ha!

I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

Apparently this is the re-badged Konica-Minolta, is an entry level camera and not particularly popular. I work with someone who had one (and is very knowledgeable) and he said that although the lens is decent, for a kit lens, that the original Minolta had some sensor and shutter problems that could cause fatal errors and he wasn't sure if Sony fixed them. He thought $300 was too much (best to check e-Bay). However this type of camera/lens combo would be good for what you want to do. You could probably pick up a nearly new Nikon D40 for the same price and have a much better product. I would also recommend the Pentax K100D, which I have and still use occasionally. Personally I would try to buy a new camera because warranties are important and rarely transferrable (at least in Canada).

Why don't you(or you wife) sweet talk your father-in-law(her father) into giving you the camera for free? You could convince him it's a late wedding present.Wink [;)]

Camera opinions?

Howdy,

My new father in law has offered me his 'old' DSLR camera for $300 (he just upgraded).  I don't know much at all about cameras and photography, but want to learn, and so does my wife(!)

Here's what he has:

2007 Sony Alpha a100 DSLR, 18-70 mm zoom lens, lithium ion battery, shoulder strap, battery charger, USB cable, USB-to-video cable for TV, Spare lithium ion battery, 4GB SanDisk memory card, Sony carrying case, Magic Lantern Guide Sony a100 by Peter K. Burian, and original boxes, packaging material, user’s guide, software CD, etc.

Will this setup work for taking WIP and gallery pictures of model aircraft?  What about taking walkaround pictures of aircraft and cars?  For the photobugs out there, is this a decent beginner's to advanced camera in general?  Finally, is this a good deal?  It seems to be, but again, I don't know much at all about cameras.  He sent me a review of it, which sounds great, but I don't understand most of the terminology used yet.  It is a mulitple page review, and the 'next' button is hidden towards the bottom of each page.

Thanks!

Cheers,
Alex
