Do you build "handed"?
Posted by wing_nut on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 6:00 PM

By that I mean do you favor one side of the model of the other?   I just noticed this the other day.  When I build and I have 2 assemblies or sets of parts to install on both side of the model, I find myself always doing the right side 1st.  In my head, weird twisted place that it is, the left side is the good side.  So I will do the right side 1st sort of as practice.  I am sure this comes form all the aircraft I've built and to me the left side is not necessarily the good side but it the more interesting side.  And I am sure THAT is because the nose art is usually on the left side.

Needless to say I do of course try to get all side correct.  Can't very well ask a judge to not turn the model around.

I've never really noticed if I do anything like that or not. One thing that I am conscientiously aware of is I always decal from the front of the left side first, along the left side towards the rear then around the tail and up the right side.

I wouldnt call it handed, but I tend to either do the turrets of tanks first because there more fun to me, or save them for later and get the not fun chasis out of thew ay first

A guy who's forum alter ego is a lizard armed w/ an AR15 calling someone else nuts?, how does that work?. Alien [alien] As a sculptor my natural tendencies to sculpt the left side of a face(my right)first, is the most difficult habit to break.  It causes all sorts of symmetry bugs and extra work to correct. But I don't seem to have the same problem when I model.

Jeez, it's about time somebody noticedBig Smile [:D]

What about any other little quirks you may have...like at right fielder that always steps on 3rd base when he runs in.

Marc, I never really thought about it until now, but yeah, I am 'handed'.  Not so much with the construction, but I always mask and paint starting at the port stabilizer, then the st'bd one, then working my way up the fuselage.  Never noticed til you asked...

I'm definitely "left handed", both literally and modeling-wise.

Marc, you do know, don't you, that the polite response to someone who calls you "weird" is: "Why thank you! What a nice thing to say!" Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I also just really  looked at your avatar. I see we both like to build things with wings…including tanks…Mischief [:-,]

I just thought I had a bit of OCD in my builds and display. Left side, because of nose art. Most all my planes point to my left on the shelf, Helicopters point right. Occasionally I'll turn a plane the other way just for change, and it bugs the heck out of me.

if i am trying something new (like cutting out dive vents on a 1/72 u-boat) i will pick a side to start. usually the other side will look better because of the "practice" so i will continue, when feasible, to have a "practice side" and a "show side".
