Modeling and the VA
Posted by Dick McC2 on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 5:41 AM

Back in April I stopped off at the VA Nursing Home here in Murfreesboro and volunteered to do kind of a "show-and-tell" with some of my models. I left my name, phone number, e-mail address, and a brief description of what I was offering to do, but never did get a reply. For several months I made several phone calls and attempted to make contact with the Activities Director, left my name and number or her answering machine, but never heard a thing. The whole apparent lack of interest on them left me pretty discouraged and a little ticked off. As a USN 'Nam vet I thought the guys over there would enjoy a visit from anyone and seeing WWII, Korea, and 'Nam era models would make their day. Well, lo and behold, yesterday afternoon the phone rang and it was the Activities Director! After six months she had retained my short note and wanted to know if I was still interested in coming over. I was completely floored as I had given up on ever hearing from them. Anyway, we set up a date for next month. I plan on taking over a dio - 24" x 24" - I did a while back of the flight deck of the USS Hancock which I split diagonally with a Corsair from WWII on one side and a Skyhawk from 'Nam on the other (both in 1/48th with deck tractors). It should be interesting to say the least and if it goes off well, I may arrange to do a "show-and-tell" once a month. Its something you guys and girls with a VA facility in your area might consider.
