Go and look at the easy snap together ones. The first model I put together was a Hummer from The Lost World, it only took 30min to put together (and about 3 days of playing with it to break).

EDIT: I think the most important part is that you help him and spend time with him. Some of the best memories I have are building models with my dad. We didnt build anything pretty, but it went up on the bookshelf anyways. Im rebuilding one now, just so I can tell people "me and my dad built that one a loooong time ago".
Nothing like seeing "two palm trees humpin' a garbage can"!! That's what we called the heavy lift guys when I was on an EH-60 at Fort Carson back in '91.
I'll never look at garbage cans the same again.

You might try Pegasus E-Z Snapz kits. They snap together but have good detail inspite of it, and they include decals and stickers as options. Also, some of Polar Lights Star Trek kits (the 1/1000 Enterprise and Klingon D-7 for example) are snap fit with stickers as well as waterslide decals.

There a great place to start out, there meant for young modelers.  Pre-colored and decalled and bandai always makes good quality stuff.

There is a Revell series of Star Wars kits I build with my son. He's into the Clone Wars and they are snap together. There are also some Speed Racer and other snap kits from TV and cartoons made by Polar Lights.

the Hasegawa Eggplanes look like a good starter kit.

My long suffering and ever patient wife has decided to try to put her hand to modeling using one.

review

not too expensive, not too many parts, and a cute looking model

The 21st century kits ARE good. Non-millitary, firt find him a good, snap fit. Probably a car kit. AMT and Revell make some snap cars and they look decent. Glue kit, try a monogram jet or something. Could even try an airliner. Low part count. Or try a pegasus models snap kit too. All depends. Good luck and welcome to the forums!

With little guys and gals bigger is better. I suggest you look at getting any of the 21st Century Toys 1:32 kits. They are getting harder to find but these are perfect for your puposes. The Bf109 can be assembled in just a short period of time...including gluing the parts together instead of relying on the screws and snap fit pieces. I built this one in under 2 hours as part of a slam build event.

Average price is less than $20.

Sprue Brothers has a limited selection left! I like the Bf109.

My second suggestion would be the Dragon 1:32 P-51 Mustangs...again big and affordable...around $30.00. I've built a couple of them and they're OK...not perfect but fun to build.

Can you please point me to kits suitable for a 6 year old. My son keeps asking me to get him his first kits but I could not yet find something that he can easily build. At this age he does not have alotof patience. I was thinking of something that will not require painting / glueing and preferably non-military models.
