Dangers of modeling
Posted by Khalee2 on Thursday, November 26, 2009 5:16 PM

Bordom Yes I'm bord right now, after getting a couple of kits done, I have no idea what to get next, other than I know I want to keep going.

Also found out bifocals arn't really good for modeling either, so I guess I'll get myself some reading glasses or something to use while I put them together.

Small parts go flying away very easy but so far Ive been able to find them, being far sighted helps.

Super glue hates me, Don't know why I keep trying to use that stuff as I have yet to have any luck with it. It sticks to everything but where I want it.

Thats about it right now Maybe after I get moved back home I look to get a few more kits, thing is I wont have a lot of space so maybe I'll stick with 1/72 scale for right now.

Don't feel bad, super glue hates everyone, equally.  I find the only way to deal with it is to put a tiny dab on a piece of wax paper (or waxed cardboard) and then use a pin (or similar tool) to move an even tinier amount, to the surface where you're attaching something.  Any other way leads to nothing but disaster.  I've tried those fancy tips and after a few uses, they're all gummed up and worthless.

As for your vision dilemna, you might want to look into something like an Opti-visor (or even one of the knock-offs).  They'll work in conjunction with your glasses, or in place of your glasses if all you're looking for is magnification.

What's your main area of interest - planes, armor, ships, autos?  I'm a plane guy, but when I got tired of doing, essentially, the same thing over and over, I built a tank.  Really re-sparked my interest in building.  So much so, in fact, I picked up another 3 armor kits (and another plane Laugh [(-D]).  You might want to try building something that isn't your main focus - you might be surprised how much it helps.

I build a little bit of everything so I don't get bored with any one type of model.

I've made the transition from bifocals to 2X drug store reading glasses to large magnifing glass with built in light. Sometimes I even have to use the 2X AND the magnifing glass at the same time. My hands hurt from arthritis and they shake (some days more than others). Getting old is a pain in the a--.

When things seem to be getting out of hand, I just take a break, go read a book or do something else. Going to the local park for a nice long walk kills two birds with one stone. Start over tomorrow where you left off. The long walks works for me and makes my wife and my doctor happy at the same time.

I use Super Glue as little as possible. It doesn't like me either.

Just remember, it's only a hobby.

That ain't nothing...if you really want to see those small parts...

I rarely ever use CA. Some use it as a replace for tube glue. Some use it as a filler. I use it for attaching those fiddly bits such as antenna masts and other light load parts only.

Ditto what Hawk said about CA... I use it only when there's no alternative, attaching metal to plastic, or to attach painted parts to painted surfaces...

The only material I have seen that actually calls for CA (Super Glue) is resin.

I squirted a large amount of thin superglue on my hand once, glued my fingers together, you have no idea how bad that hurt, then when I was able to get a pencil in to pry them loose, yeah that hurt even more!

Get a magnifier lamp and head visor magnifier. Make sure they are of optic glass quality.

Super glue hates me, Don't know why I keep trying to use that stuff as I have yet to have any luck with it. It sticks to everything but where I want it.

DONT apply super glue from the tube or bottle. Put a drop or two on a soda pop top or bottle cap and use a toothpick to apply the stuff. Less is more with CY adhesives.

Thats about it right now Maybe after I get moved back home I look to get a few more kits, thing is I wont have a lot of space so maybe I'll stick with 1/72 scale for right now.

Get larger and multi engine aircraft subjects in 1/72 and there is less bother with the smaller size.
