Help, I'm addicted!
Posted by joelster on Saturday, December 12, 2009 5:20 PM

Ok, so i've bought 7 models now in the past 4 days. When does the madness end? lol. I have several hobbies and this is the cheapest one of them all, so it's refreshing to be occupied with so much fun for so little $$$$$$$. Dropping $100-$200 on ebay is a lot easier than dropping $5G into one of my real cars. All I need now is to freshen up my building skills and to have at it. I'm going to start with getting my painting up to snuff by practicing on some figures. If I screw them up at least it's only $7 down the drain.

I'm going to go into Hobby Lobby again sometime next week with another 40% off coupon and swipe another $49.99 kit for $29.99, lol.

It never ends!!!! It only gets better. The best tip I can give for good deals, is at contests. The vendors always have awesome deals and you can really score towards the end of the show. They really don't want to pack em all back up. I got 1/48 Hasi. spit  / 1/48 Revell me-410 for $5 each and a ton of other GREAT deals at the last show I went to. Way better than ebay or anywhere for that matter.

Not exactly sure how new to the hobby you are joelster but allow me to enlighten you to some rather disturbing news. It never ends. Rather the madness carries over into airbrushes, reference and how-to books, paints, decals, tools of all sorts, opti visors, adhesives, motor tools, photo etch and resin accessories and addicitively reading this forum. It then moves into creating your modeling space with benches, lamps, storage and display cases, paint booths, etc... Your builds then consume your hobby room, the garage, the living room, the kitchen and bathroom even your neighbors house. Yes, indeed, happily, it never ends. Be consoled that you are not alone. So enjoy your modeling and embrace the insanity as it your friend. Wah ha ha.

Uh hum, well anyhoo, welcome to the hobby and I look forward to seeing your builds in the future.

In addition to Hobby Lobby here are some stores you might want to check out  for tools and accessories.

Sallys- sanding-finishing tools

Harbour Freight- dental type tools, metal  files, motor tools, mini clamps, opti-visors-magnifiers

Dollar type stores- plastic containers, toys and gift type items that have useful lights and fiber optics when you crack them open.

And of course Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot- rattle cans, bulk solvents (paint thinner, acetone)

You will get to the point where you think about things you throw in the trash or walk in a store and look at things and think "that might be something useful"

Example- my kids eat lots of pudding/jello/fruits that come in little plastic cups. Great for mixing paints, cleaning, storing parts, etc.

When I left the hobby in 1998, I had about 10 kits in the stash, my highest number ever... I toted those things around with me for the remainder of my US Army career, which was about 5 years.. Finally retired and settled down to ONE address for the forseeable future, I came back in June last year, and I upped that number to over 120 by December...  Roughly 1900.00 dollars' worth of kits, and I'm still buying more than I build... I bought mostly Ebay, since I financed it by selling stuff on Ebay, but HL's 40% coupons (and a tame store manager) have played a large part as well...  Especially in getting more tools, supplies, and materials.

Welcome to the madness that is scale modeling...

Yeah, go for the deals. 'Cause, the MORE you BUY, the MORE you SAVE... Yeah, keep repeating that to yourself!

I'm just thankful for all those guys with 500+ kits in your stash, I can show my wife how my collection of 50+ kits are very small by comparison.

I have over 200 kits in my stockpile. Does it end?

Sorry , probably not. :) Is that bad? No

You could spend your money on worse things. Think of it as planning for retirement.

This isn't a hobby forum. It is a support group for modellers and is littered with enablers!  I'm smart enough stash the stash in 5 seperate locations on 3 properties in 2 counties. No one has ever seem it in its full glory.  My mom is an enabler.  She once bought me three of Revell's USS Lionfish since they were $3 at Walmart.  "Didn't you say you could convert them into different ships?"  She's also the reason I have Dragon's Loki. $25 at a show.  Doesn't count the number of mounted figures she's pushed me towards.

Hey I'm the broke college student.  She's the one who pays for everything.  How can I not blame her?  She bought me tools for Christmas and let me have them early!

Fermis is right - you can pick up some great deals at shows. IF you are lucky enough to live where they are held.

Whether you have a stash of 1 or hundreds it is the same - collecting. Keeping the compulsion to a controlled level is the challenge.

I agree with the general sentiment on this thread to date: It never ends.  It just goes through fast and slow phases.

There's always annother bargain up for auction or ar a convention, or a re-release of something that hasn't been available for years that you always wanted, or a "want to do this variant someday so I should get a spare or two" idea that comes along.  It's just a matter of how many of these or other factors hit at once.

Seems you have been bitten and bitten hard brother. Its good to see such enthusiasm put towards such a maddeningly addictive hobby. Now you have a good reason to be up at 2 or 3 in the morning to finish a set of tracks or spray a color on that piece of  kit  you are working on. Oh well, might as well just work through the night and not even go to bed. Ha,another one caught in its spider web. When it gets that bad, you are a junkie. When you go past a hobby store you tell yourself " Just one more, Just One Fix". That too, will pass and you will get back to normal. Remember its just a hobby. Play safe.

Cheers and Merry Christmas

I was looking at all of the x-mas presents I bought for everyone this year, and I realized that I didn't spend NEARLY enough money on myself this x-mas, lol. So I went ahead and treated myself to 2 new cyber-hobby Tiger tank kits to go with my Whittmann's last Tiger that I got the other day from spruebrothers. Fast shipping from them BTW.

Found  a smoking hot deal at Hobby Lobby. I got a Tamiya Sd.Kfz.142 Sturm III AusfB for $11.39 after my 40% off coupon. This kit was marked $18.99 for some reason, lol. It's everywhere for about $40 or so if you shop for it online. I should flip it and make a few bucks, lol.

I am officially out of control now with the purchasing. I have a Cyber-hobby "Whittmann's Last Tiger" plus another one coming in a few days (get em while they are cheap), 2 more Cyber-hobby Tiger's coming Tues or Wed, plus I am leading a few auctions on ebay right now. I will be up over 20 kits by the end of the week.

The thing I love about this post is I can show my wife and say: "see it could always be worse!" As she tells me I can't add any more to my stash of about 30! The best thing I had read in a long time was the article a couple issues ago talking about the "gamemanship" involved in hiding the kits from the spouse.

SOOOOOOOO TRUE! She caught one of my Ebay purchases today. She doesn't know about the other 3! LOL!

At least you don't have the kids humming the "Tribbles theme" whenever you're just talking about the possibility Whistling of getting another kit.
