Getting young people into the hobby...
Posted by RTimmer on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 9:26 AM

Fellow modelers,

I would like to highlight a wonderful post on Gerald "Hawkeye" Voigt's blog.  A short time back he posted the full video from an interesting program in the UK.  The program is "Toy Stories" hosted by James May.  Some of you may recognize James May from "Top Gear" which is carried on this side of the pond on BBC America.

In this particular episode, May discusses his lifelong love of modeling and the special place that Airfix holds for him.  He then goes on a mission to see about interesting young folks in the hobby and works with a group of kids at a school (about middle school age). Many interesting adventures, comments and insight along the way.  It all leads up to attempting to construct a Spitfire at 1:1 scale with a 1:1 scale kit based on the Airfix plans.  I haven't finished watching it yet, so not sure how it all turns out.  The bits I have viewed are very enjoyable.

I just wanted to provide a heads up, and hope others enjoy as much as I am.  No affiliation with Gerald or Hawkeye Hobbies, just an satisfied reader of his blog.

Just copy and paste the above link into your browser.  Sorry, but I haven't got the hang yet of embedding an live link in a post. Enjoy!

Cheers, Rick

Pretty cool stuff, I'd like to have one, but maybe a 51 or a 40!!!

For the link, after you type it out or copy/paste, just hit the space bar a couple times and it'll light up.

As this series of videos points out, it is crucial to give kids EXPOSURE to our hobby. As it is with anything in life, if someone found it the least bit enjoyable, chances are one would continue doing it or return again at some future point.

Believe it or not there are kids who dislike video games, they either cannot process the rapidity of the game or lack the coordination to do it well. They also do not off the tactile experience other hobbies do such as scale modeling.
