If you like to work with soft plastic, Toy Soldiers of San Diego, and Conte make quite a few finely detailed figures suitable for painting.  They are pretty easy to customize if you like moving arms and legs and changing heads.  TSSD also carries a nice line of cannons and wheeled vehicles.  Rick

Airfix had 1 or 2 54mm Rev war figures, Masterbox has promised 2 Civil War kits, a trooper and Indian scout and three charging cavalry, but who knows when they will be released. Dragons Union infantry was also 54mm and is OOP. For those periods, you pretty much have to go with metal or resin figures. Check out Military Miniatures Warehouse. This is the absolute best site for those periods.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Dragon did make some Union troops a while back (set #7501). Imex is one of the 1/32 scale manufacturers that are widely available.

Model Expo carries civil and revolutionary war kits, but I am not sure of the scale.
