 Manstein's revenge:

 carsanab:

usually I go and raid Manstein's stash....He's usually not home....always off somewhere east picking a fight

...MEOW......

Carlos

This is true....so far he hasn't even made a dent in it....but I was sorta sore when he took that hard to find Godzilla kit...

Manny noticed one kit was missing; conclusive proof his stash is not big enough....

MEOW...

No.. it was Manny's German prescision and attention to detail.. plus the gaping hole in the stash where Godzilla was hiding...!

I also don't have a local shop, so I get most off the internet.

HobbyTown in Fresno is probably the closest brick-and-mortar shop to you, I'd guess. Most of my purchases from them are consumables that I need immediately.

I have to second the nod for Tower Hobbies. I've placed several orders from them over the years, and they have always been superb. Decent prices and super-fast shipping (I ordered some paint from them over this past weekend, and received it today), and I once called them in the evening, Pacific Time--and spoke to a person! Being primarily sellers of R/C stuff, they don't have a whole lot in the way of detailing gear, but if you need consumables or a current kit from a manufacturer whose line they sell, they're just about unbeatable.

I placed an order from Model Roundup about four years ago, and found them decent except for their ordering system. Hopefully that's changed by now.

I've just recently placed an order from Sprue Brothers, and am waiting for them to receive an item that was mistakenly listed as in-stock. So far they've been doing all right.

I haven't purchased a kit from an eBay seller for a while, but they're a decent source for out-of-production kits. Many sellers are clueless as to how to properly photograph their kits, though, especially kits that are no longer sealed inside.

In progress: Hasegawa P-51D/K (being built as a D), Tamiya Morris Mini Cooper 1275S, Testors Kaman H-43B Huskie (held up by lack of parts)

To be resumed sooner or later: Academy M151A2 with Eduard photo-etch

I wish Wally World and Kmart still carried model kits.

AMEN Brother!!!Toast Was a sad day when they pulled them from the shelves, like an end of an era. And they wonder why todays kids don't build models, because they don't see them.

I buy mine where everI can find a kit I want. I will model shop online at ebay, amazon, squadron, hobby surplus and a few online hobby shops. If I cant find a kit I want online there is always hobby lobby, Micheal's, Hobby USA,  and the old mom & pop hobby shops.I wish Wally World and Kmart still carried model kits.

LHS....yes, in theory it can cost more if shipping charges combined with kit prices are lower for mail order but I have sometimes received incomplete kits; exchanging is easier and quicker at the LHS.

The most recent offending mfr was Eduard- no clear Bf-108 parts. Exchanged at LHS that same day.

I use Atomic Hobbies & Games to buy my models from.. Un-like Sprue & Great Models webstore, Atomic doesn't charge shipping over $25.00 and there prices beat Sprue Bros. and Great Models by several bucks per kit... These other companies you need to buy well over $200 to get free shipping.. Now you tell me where you can buy brand new kits at $150.00 and pay no shipping costs!!!  The little shop owners like myself know were to go for deal and Atomic is the place. I don't charge a mark-up on shipping costs because there are none!!! Alot of these ebay deales and other hobby shops charge a handeling fee "WHY"!!!! The kit is in your home or shop.. Your going to charge me for getting up out of your office chair... They say it's for trips to the post office but when you think about it them print labels from home and then use the postal site to request a pick-up and then they charge you flat rate chrages when they could have used regular priroity mail and svaed you $2-5 bucks!!!!  These guys will sell a Hasegawa F-14A 1/48 scale for $58.00 and up.. We sell it for $35-39 bucks with $10.00 shipping "NO HANDELSING FEES" A TOTAL OF $45-49 tHE OTHER GUYS TOTAL WITH THE HANDELING FEES. FLAT RATE SHIPPING YOUR LOOKING AT $70.00... Just do your home work ebay is not the only place to buy models.. Model forums are a great place to pick up kits..

Just my opion...

I also don't have a local shop, so I get most off the internet. So you want all my secrets hmmmm. Big Smile

My regulars are

Tower Hobbies, good for your standard kits from most of the major manufacturers (Revell, Tamiya, Italeri etc). Interestingly although there are corporate ties to Revell, I can get most Revell kits cheaper from other venders, but the prices on the other brands are hard to beat. They frequently have specials too ($15 off $75 purchase etc) and the shipping is a fixed price so those big orders are nice, I got a box from them awhile back the size of my (then) 8 year old son and shipping was still only $9. They also have super fast service, sometimes only 2 days, and almost always less than a week.

http://www.towerhobbies.com/

Megahobby also gets a lot of my money, a little better selection of smaller brands than Tower, and the prices are close, Megahobby has been beating Tower on price for Revell kits recently.

http://www.megahobby.com/

For cars specifically, I will ofetn use Model Round Up, the ordering system is a bit archaic but the prices, selection and service are good. Primarily domestic brands though (Revell, AMT, Lindberg), also a good selection of resin and aftermarket.

http://www.modelroundup.com/

Sprue Bros has already been mentioned, I use them primarily for aircraft from many of the smaller manufacturers and limited run stuff, Eastern European brands in particular. They also have super fast shipping.

Squadron is further down on my list, but they usually get one or two large orders from me most years (over $100 = free shipping). Most of my model purchases from Squadron are added to book orders.

Ebay is another source, but I limit it to really good deals and hard to find stuff.

If you like resin I can give you a good sized list for resin car and truck stuff too.

Hummm...mostly ebay...look for the good buys.  You have to have patience....and a stash so you do not need it right away!!

Also pick up items a shows and supplies as needed from most of the major internet sites.

I stay away from hobby shops.....except for paint

When living in my native Dallas, TX I was spoiled with many good hobby shops to choose from (most of the best among them have since closed). Now that I've moved to the sticks of Western KY, nearly all of my things must be mail ordered, mostly from Squadron, Sprue Brothers, Michigan Toy Soldier, the Red Lancer etc.

The only retailers with ANY sort of hobby items within 100+ miles of me are a Hobby Lobby and Michaels, but their selection is meager at best.

The only problem with Great Models, that if find, is they list OOP items that they last recieved in like 2006.  I learned to order things with their red check mark next to the price, meaning it is in stock.  If it's not in stock, but they had it in stock recently, they usually just order some from a distributor.....i think.  A while ago I ordered the Dragon Models MLRS that wasn't in stock, but I got it via UPS in 2 weeks.  Kinda tricky.  Squadron is much easier to order from though.

Local hobby shop

Sprue Brothers

Squadron

Roll Models

I have tried placing two orders with Great Models but have had serious bad luck and don't think I will be ordering from them again any time soon.  I also shop Pacific Front Hobbies for model warship supplies.

If I cant find anything I like at he local hobby shop (Niagara Hobby or Ace Hobby in the Buffalo, NY area), I get items from Squadron.com, and GreatModels.com and sometimes Megahobby.com.  I use ebay for OOP kits and hard to find kits.  I have yet to order from spruebros.

The Count

I have an interest in old planes and cars and need a good website to buy both...Cheap! lol. Let me know where you guys go. All opinions greatly appriciated.

If by old planes and cars you mean the era. there's all kinds of places...  If by old you mean, old kits that're out of production, you can't get 'em cheap, lol..

But here's a site that specializes i old model kits, just in case..

http://www.oldmodelkits.com/

Pesonally, I don't buy there because Ebay is by far the cheapest way to go for old kits.. Just don't get caught up in the dealers vs. the estate sales and such... I confine my searches there to the .99 to 5.99-range...

I tend to buy from Sprue Brothers, Squadron, e-Hobbyland, Lucky Models and www.ericyymodel.com.

For older models I will buy from ebay.

i've been trying to buy locally, a new shop opened right around the corner from me.  his prices on kits match just about anything i've seen discounted online.  i made a comment about that and he says he shops the online competition and would rather move kits than sit on them.  now if he'd just be open during his posted hours...Stick out tongue

other than that i browse online, and don't have loyalty to any one online shop, i try and compare all prices, shipping included before buying.  and they have to take paypal, least then i know they are legit.
