2. Detailing (PE/ scratch build) and accuracy
You can only choose one of the features.
For example, a highly accurate, detail model kit but so so paint job, no highlighting or weathering/shading.
Another one will be normal OOB model but great paint job with prof shading and weathering.
Which one will you think be better finish model kit?
Paint job..
I've seen so many absolutely awesome and stunning OOB builds it's incredible...!

Yikes, model kits have souls?! And here I was thinking the carpet monster was the only one with a soul.

You can add as much detail as you want, but it's a great paint job that brings a model to life

Once a box of injected molded plastic has been assembled with all your best efforts, techniques and pride does it only then have soul. It becomes a artistic expression of your creativity that cannot be exactly duplicated by anyone including yourself.
Far as detailed and scratch built vrs. excellent OOB paint....I would say all arsenal in your modeling quiver must be used to achieve a higher level or soul. Anything else is just another finished kit.
Adding to this I always like to take a few items a step further than I have in past builds. 'No guts, no glory' To expand skills and learn a bit of new kung-foo along the way.
The models with soul at contests attract viewers and inspire conversation. The rest are just there to be viewed.
The paint job makes the model good or bad, but the details really bring it to life.
I guess both are equally important.

I think it all boils down to the skill of the modeler. Being skillful with painting and detailing will always bring out the best results in any model kit you can build.

The sprue left in the box picked clean of it's parts is the soul, and its such a shame we discard it like so many chicken bones into the trash...
mg.mikael Yikes, model kits have souls?! And here I was thinking the carpet monster was the only one with a soul.
No,no,no, the carpet monster is an evil, vile, SOULESS a$$, lying in wait, to spoil the soul of your craft!!!!
For me, it's dirt and grime, mainly. Really depends on where you want the attention to go.....say you chop off the cowlings and throw in a highly detailed A/M engine.......I'd say then that the engine is the soul.
Gotta agree both are important, can't choose one over the other. Had people tell me I shouldn't paint my detailed builds and then say how great they look with paint!
BTW, there's no such thing as the carpet monster. The carpet is merely the forest that the Borrowers live in. If you didn't know, the Borrowers are nasty little creatures that lie in wait to steal your most prized styrene or PE detail just to give it back days or weeks later after you have already replaced it. They feed on our negative emotions...., we must be cautious.....
