Going hunting after work for a model to start on and see what I can do.  Got a few tools from Harbor Freight  this week and started a little tool kit.  Found some great tips on this forum to point me in the right direction, Thank you!! I will keep you posted on what I will find to build,  Have no real hobby shop so I will try my local big box store. I will  need some help along the way  super new to this craft hope you dont mind.

About the kits:

Many in stores like carry models that are re-releases with new boxes featuring new art work to draw in a new generation of customers. This is actually to your advantage as the parts count is low and progress building will be faster. The way to tell is compare prices AND parts count. A 1/48 scale P-51 Mustang for 10$ with 35 parts is a re-release. The same plane & scale with 85 parts for 30$ is a newer release.

The 'vintage' kit is a good start, expect fit issues and seams that will requiring filling. It will require more patience to build up a decent model yet for a 'first build' it will progress your skills faster, cheaper and better than a kit that requires little extra care & work.

People here are eager and willing to help you along. Start a thread once you select a kit and get started. State you are new and request help along the way.

Good Luck!

It can be tough to find a place that still carries models.  All of the "big box" stores around me no longer do.  Wal-Mart, Kmart, Target, nothing.

Michaels craft store still has some.  If there is one near you, check it out.

Hope you find something.  Have fun building it.

Thank you I will start a new post  with pic's when I get home with a model. I have a Michaels craft store next to me will go there first.

I was watching a show last night on The Black Hawk helicopter I said to myself i would like to build one. Do you think that is a little to big of a project for a first build? thats if I could find one.

Careful at Michaels! The ones I've been in are horrifically overpriced without the 40% coupon, which then just brings them down to normal pricing. Shopping online may be your best bet. Sprue Brothers and Squadrons are some of the better online stores. Luckymodel is another.

IMHO a Blackhawk would be jumping in the deep end. Try finding an older Tamiya aircraft kit, they are simpler, cheap, but still fit nicely together. That way you can get your feet wet without fear of drowning! Or try the Tamiya P-47D Bubble Top Thunderbolt, which just about falls together. It's a bit more expensive, but is one of the best engineered kits around. It's a good confidence booster, as it's an "adult" kit with lots of pieces, and yet is easy to build into a nice model.

So long folks!

You're right Bill.  I forgot to mention the 40% off coupon is the way to go.  If he has a Michaels nearby, and a 40% off coupon, that may be the best place to pick out a first model.  Get to see the box, feel the weight, compare the available selection (even though it is limited).  And best of all, no delayed gratification waiting for it to arrive in the mail.  Jump right in and start slapping it together.

OK, got the 40% off from the website and I will print it out before I leave work..  will start small I see what you are saying. This place is great and the people are super cool...

Cant wait to go hunting. Think I have my mind set on something Military, just to do research on the piece I pick.
