I agree with Hans 100%... built new workspace in the basement two months ago and it really helps me build models more effectively with all of tools and paints within my arm reach.  I bought the cabinets &shelves system called 'Gladiators' which is commonly used in garages and it can be easily found at Home Depot, Lowes and Mernards.  If you are serious about creating a good workspace, be prepared to spend $500 like I did on mine.  Then I bought a large set of metal shelves to hold all of the kits not shown in the picture.

Best thing about those Gladiator sets... you see white rows of white boards on the wall?  You can hang buckets, hooks, or cabinets anywhere and it is not permanent.  I recently added two more metal shelves at the top to hold all of my reference books which is not in the picture this time.  You see I have OCD and I am loving it... NOT!  LOL

Rule Number ONE on Set-Up for new War Room:

Put Shelving up FIRST!

It's tempting to get the bench set up ASAP, but I highly recommend that, if you want it easy, put your shelving up first, be it storage, display, "extra-bench", paint-booth, photo-table, whatever...

First thing I did in my latest one was to take a hollow door (found it at a house demolition site.  It had one good side and was perfect for my needs) about two and 3/4 feet wide and turn it into a table... I simply ran a firring strip (1 1/2" x 3/4") along the base of the window sill, then cut two legs from a piece of 2 x 2 about 40 inches long...   It doubles as diorama table for the big ones, and has a relatively massive storage space under it for my parts bins and hangar queens/DRMO boxes...

Congrats on the move, would love to see some pictures of your new hobby room once it's set up. I'm looking for some inspiration myself.

I couldn't take it.  I've got 3/4 of my possessions boxed up in the garage, including my entire workbench.  I brought out a cheapie kit ( Hobby Boss 1/350 Song Class SSK) and dug some primer and sandpaper out of all the packed boxes with which to work on it.  Been priming and sanding every day at 5:00am before the little ones wake up, just little spurts at the kitchen table in between packing  boxes.  I've had the modeling bug bad lately, esp. since most of my stuff has been packed for a while.  Funny how no matter what the circumstances, sometimes you can't put a good hobby down.

The good news is, the house we're moving to is almost twice as big as the one we're in now.  It's six bedrooms, including a full basement and family room.  So I get a whole room to myself to keep my modeling area in.  It's gonna be like a mini hobby shop with all the display cases and whatnot.  I'll post up pics when I get it set up.  Pretty thrilled.  We move Thursday.

Anyway, just a post about nuthin'.

I hear you, brother.  I have movers packing our stuff as I write.  Boxed my kits up last month and carefully packaged the most sensitive ones and have them in my SUV, for my upcoming interstate move.  I am excited, though.  My darling wife will let me have my own room, as my daughter is heading off to college.  I had a recent post asking for suggestions on how to build my new "man cave" for model building....suggestions and pics were awesom....can't wait to set it up.

Sometimes the itch gets stronger when you know you cant (or shouldn't) scratch it.

I agree with the earlier post, want pics when set up.

Since I've started converting my son's old room to my hobby-room, I've been so much more inspired. It helps to have all this room to move and organize and display. I feel invigorated and have finished a couple of overdo projects.

I was without a War Room on several PCS moves that kept me outta building models (oh, and my job didn't allow me the time since I deployed 5 times in that time period) for almost ten years.  Then, I had to use a TV tray for almost a year before we moved to place that I could resurect as my War Room..

A room to set up shop? That is my dream & do post the pictures!

It really takes away momentum & inspiration having to set up + tear down the work bench all the time. (currently the kitchen table)Bang Head
