1/72 figure scale ?
Posted by somefella on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 9:22 AM

My little guy recently bought a box of Airfix 1/72 German Infantry soldiers.  I noticed that within the box itself some figures were bigger than others. Is there any 1/72 figures that suppose to be a true 1/72 scale or is it a hit or miss thing?  I have a 1/72 Heller Spitfire and a Italeri 1/72 Mustang ( both unbuilt ) and noticed quite a difference in the seat size. Is different model and figure companies off on the 1/72 scale?

Thanks

I have a box of HO scale figures ( MPC US Marines ) that claims they can be used with 1/72 or 1/76.  In it some of the firgures are bigger than the rest as well. Funny thing that.

Actual size of figures in 1/72 scale can vary a lot.  As you've mentioned, even within the same kit of figures.  Manufacturers justify this by reminding us that real people vary in size and shape as well.  So a figure could actually be used for a 1/76 kit or a 1/72 kit.  a 6' figure for example in 1/72 scale would be 1" high.  The same figure at 1" height in 1/76 scale would be 6'4" in real life which would be quite acceptable.  Anyway, a great site to visit if you want to read a review of a 1/72 scale figure kit before buying would be Plastic Soldier Review.  They often discuss the accuracy of the scale in their reviews.

Thanks for that info Razordws. I'll have a look at that website.  The difference in size of the Airfix figures isn't just the actual height, but the helmets are bigger too. But then again, some people do have mighty big heads!LOL

When it comes to Airfix, i think their figues and vehicles that say 1/72nd are really 1/76th. I have some revell, prieser and Airfix 1/72nd German ground crew figures. While the first two are the same, the Aifix are notably smaller.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Ahh you have read some of the comments here.

Like all scales the best sculpts are found in resin & cost a lot more than their plastic brethren. As with kits you really get what you pay for.

Very true with the Airfix figures, especially trying to trim any flash off that Godawful soft plastic. The only thing I've found that works is a heated knife blade or pin ... of course if your hand slips, that makes an ugly mess of the figure ... The up side is, you pay so little for them, you can afford a few ghastly mistakes!

HO (meaning Half of  "O"-scale) is 1/87th scale...

Thanks for the info and comments folks.  I think it's best  just  to pick out the figures that work best for whatever project you are working on. Maybe some of the figures will work better with one kit and the others will work better for another. If the figure looks a bit big to fit in the cockpit of a plane, than he probably is too big.
