Squadron canopies
Posted by batai37 on Thursday, September 2, 2010 4:36 PM

I ordered a replacement canopy that's made by Squadron, but got it from a vendor other than Squadron (Squadron was out of stock), and I seem to recall reading a post or two here that Squadron always includes an extra in case you botched the first one. What I got was a single canopy.

What gives? Is this something only Squadron does, and not necessarily other vendors that carry their products? Because I feel a little screwed if I would have gotten 2 for the price of 1 if I had ordered from Squadron directly, instead of just one from this other vendor.

Yeah, I just talked to a rep at Squadron and she said they always send just one when you actually order just one. Maybe the two-fer thing was a courtesy they used to extend, but do no longer. She did say they would send a replacement if you screw up the first one though.

Many of the smaller, i.e. fighter plane type, canopies include two in the package on the same sheet of the clear acetate, while the larger ones are often solo.

Yeah, someone on another forum said the same thing.

*Edited to add: Spoke to someone at Squadron, and she claimed they always send out only one. Apparently she isn't as well-informed about these canopy replacements as the people here and elsewhere.

Good grief,

The economy is so bad that they can't spring for a spare 1 cent piece of plastic?

Mike S.

Especially since it's a one-piece part, but has to be cut into the three separate canopy pieces that involves cutting along curves longitudinally. I don't have much experience with vacform, although it doesn't seem too hard if done right...but really easy to screw up if not careful. I have a nice new #11 blade loaded on a scalpel just for the occasion.Wink

That is a somewhat larger aircraft. Not like a single seat fighter. Looking on Squadron's website, it specificly states when the canopy includes two.

Ditto stik;  I suspect it's just a matter of how many the molder can fit on a single pull in the vac form. Seems a bit trivial, but I never understood why sometimes you get two, so I'm not going to complain about only one.

I buy those Falcon sets from Squadron  for $ 10 or so. They have all manner of a/c canopies, and I actively trade the ones I don't use for ones I need, with my www buds.

Let us know how it works out. I almost ordered the same canopies, but then looked at the kit parts, they look great IMHO. Plus I think I wanna do my 219 for the "No A/M GB". The last canopy I used was on the TBD(as mentioned at Swanny's) it was a perfect match on top of the assembled kit parts. The detail wasn't quite as crisp, but I used them anyway, cause the fuse was a bit too wide for the kit parts and the vac-form could be pushed down, widening it to fit the fuse just right.
