Starting my first resin kit need some aftermarket parts and any advice.

I'm starting an all resin kit and I've never worked on resin before. The kit is a Black Sun Models 1/72 F-302 starfighter from Stargate SG-1. I'm thinking about trading out the kit landing gear for metal parts, so if anyone's built this kit any suggestions would be welcome for replacements.

The main thing I want to track down are some photo-etch vents to replace the kit's decal vents. Each vent, on the decal sheet, is about 1 1/8 inches long and a 1/4 inch wide. I just need to know what type of tank or airplane or whatever the detail set is for, who makes it, and where I could buy it.

Maybe if you included an image (scan, photo, whatever) of the vents it might help people visulize better the type of venting you need (eg mesh, luver etc)

I checked Starship Modeller's website and it didn't appear that they had any aftermarket parts for the 302, but I did run across an interesting article about making your own photoetch parts.

As for whether I need louvred or or mesh vents. I'm thinking they would be mesh, but the decal sheet isn't detailed enough to tell for certain, and I'm not averse to the idea of adding a different type of vent if it looks good. I'm already planning on adding some extra weapons and I'll probably try a camo scheme on it.

What I'm really looking for are options for photo etched parts that fit the size I listed no matter what the subject is the parts are intended for - i.e. tank, aircraft, trains, etc. If anyone's used parts in that size range I'd like to know about them. Then I can take a look, online, and pick a set I like.

I dunno if this helps you but I know Micromark has a set that lets you create and make your own photo etched parts.

K&S has a lot of metal supplies including many sizes of mesh, you might find something that would work for you.

I have one of those, but havent used it yet. From looking through the instructions it seems well within most modelers ability but it is not simple and uses some nasty chemicals, it is not something to use at the kitchen table.

Supply isn't the issue. I was looking for input from anyone who has used photo etch parts on a project, who could measure the parts they used and give me a line on what might match up. So if someone had put together a Panzer and the photo etch parts matched up to what I needed they could tell me the name of the part manufacturer and what parts pack it comes in.

Anyway, I've been looking over Eduard's website and they have pretty good prices, low enough that I don't mind buying parts and getting something that doesn't fit the criteria.

The hardest part with this has been finding a hobby shop that actually carries modelling supplies beyond just paint, glue, and kits. The best shop, near my house, closed up about six months ago and I haven't found another place like it, even though they really only specialized in R/C cars and airplanes.

Eduard makes a mesh etch kit for the 1/35th Dragon Jagpanzer that includes large sections of mesh screen for the schurzen (skirts) that helped to deflect or explode anti-tank rounds.  I believe the center sections are 1 1/2" x 1 1/2".   Or you could try bridal veil material from the fabric shop.  HTH.

Thanks, I'll take a look at that.
