A couple of quick questions about my x-29 and acrylic paints
Posted by stram8777 on Tuesday, January 13, 2004 8:58 PM
A while ago I posted about a hasegawa 1/72 x-29 I am waiting to build. The point is this i don't like the white color. I want to paint it in gray similar to what is common on f-14s. Thing is I would like to put a sharks mouth on the front. Someone told me the front of the x-29 was similar to another plane and i can not find this topic. can someone refresh my memory oor point me in the direction of some aftermarket decals that will work.

Secondly can someone tell me about Lifecolor acrylic paints? I would like to switch to acrylics just for easy clean-up. Or if possible reccomend a good line of acrylics for me to try?

I defer to the collective knowledge of the forums for these questions. thanks for any help you can give me.

I'm usually an armor modler but Ilike to use Tamiya acrylics for everything, they clean up well and are easy to use. I've only done a few planes two 1/32 spitfires and a 1/48 P-61 black widow, I used the tamiya paints on all three and they turned out fine.

The X-29 was built with many parts from the F-5 Tiger. Nothing wrong with a 'what if' camo. Just do it, as they say..!

I use DecoArt Americana acrylics from Hobbylobby. These are really good paints and run about .89 cents for a 2 oz. bottle. They have a HUGE selection of colors, mix well airbrush really good, easy to clean up, and no oders. For best adhesion and color match, I suggest using a primer first ( I use Krylon automotive spray because it's cheap and easy to use). Future floor wax makes a good sealant.

would say F-20 instead. Lifecolor are strange..Before they dry they look like mush/mud/oily you name it... but it is only a deception of the eye. Once dry they look quite nice actually.

Thanks for all of you help.

I went to Hobby Lobby today and could not find the DecoArt Americana acrylics and nobody knew what i was talking about so I bought a couple of Model master acrylics to try out. Here is hoping for some good luck with the switch.
I know this is not the place for it but can someone reccomend a website or give me some tips about thinning acrylics?

And still no luck finding decals for my X-29. Oh well the search goes on.

Shark mouths were not unusual on F-5's, many of the nations that used them made special airshow birds that used a shrarks mouth to reflect the "Tiger" or "Tiger Shark" nicknames that were common to that family of aircraft.

Keep looking for decals, I'm certain you'll find a sharks mouth custom made for the f-5s nose contour and you'll be all set.

They are in the art section with all the ceramic paints, Doesn't surprise me that they didn't know what you were talking about. They also carry Ambroid cement but didn't know what that was either when I asked when the next order would be in since it was out of stock.

Acrylics are easy to thin and airbrush. I would just practice on a white box until you get the viscosity you want. Then write down the ratio on the side of the bottle. Every color may vary in viscosity to it's hard to have a standard ratio. Most colors don't require any thinning at all. A lot depends on the surface your painting and the airbrush settings as well.
