Box Stock Contest Rules
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, January 14, 2004 9:54 PM
So many of you may already know I am entering the Tamiya Con in April with a couple of cars in the boxstock class. My question is just as simple as it is complex. There are seatbelt decals included with the Tamiya NSX. However, if I put them on, I feel that they would look pretty cheesy not being more 3D. So there are a couple of ????? I have. If I use the decal paper included in the kit to make seat belts, and use the decals on them, would that still be considered boxstock??? Or would that be considered aftermarket?? And has anyone just slapped seatbelt decals on their model at anytime??? Did they look good, or is it better to leave 'em off??

Here are the rules for the TamiyaCon on Zew Zealand, don7t think that they will vary between the USA and other locations.

QUOTE:
Eligibility

All entries must be Tamiya models. The kit product number is required for registration.

The contest is open to any person so long as they are resident in New Zealand.

Entries must be delivered and registered in person between 8.00am and 11.00am on Saturday 29th March 2003. No third party (proxy) entries will be accepted. The entrant must be the person who built the model. Any late entries will be at the discretion of the Chief Judge.

Juniors may be required to produce sufficient evidence of their age. Junior class entrants must be 17 years of age or under.

The winner of the trip to Japan must be able to travel internationally (i.e. must have a valid passport with at least 6 months remaining). No cash substitute is offered.
Competition

Modifications and conversions are allowed including the use of other manufacturers’ products providing the entry remains primarily a Tamiya kit (e.g. after-market decals, figures, diorama materials or photo-etch and detail sets can be used to enhance a Tamiya kit). The finished kit should contain at least 70% original kit content.

Box stock (unmodified) kits entered must be accompanied by the original Tamiya instruction sheet. No deviation from the original instruction sheet is permitted. After-market decals for box stock entries are allowed.

All judgement decisions are final. No correspondence will be entered into.

Senior Tamiya appointed personnel will judge all entries based on accuracy, finish and overall realism.
Awards

Winners must be present to accept their awards. All prizes not claimed will be given as spot prizes to the general public.

The prestigious Tamiya Master Modeller award will be presented to the modeller whose entry displays the finest modelling skill and workmanship.

The Tamiya Master Modeller will travel to Japan to display their model(s) in an honorary Tamiya booth and alongside the winners of the American Tamiya/Con event at the Shizuoka Hobby Show. After the show, all these models will be given pride of place at the Tamiya Museum at Tamiya HQ, as a tribute to all Master Modellers.

So if you enter the Box-stock category I reckon you will have to use those decals or AM ones if available.

I saw those rules on the US site also......maybe I should restate the question.....ummm let's see, normally I would use masking tape for seatbelts, and of course some photo etched brass for the buckles...what I was wondering is since this is 'box stock', does that mean that I can't use....let's say strips of paper from the decal backing to make the seatbelts more 3D, or am I dwelling too much into this??? If I am (which I probably am) would just the seatbelt decals look ok, or should I just leave 'em off all together??

......Actually guys and girls after reading this post I decided to edit it a little....I can see I may be reading into the 'box stock' idea a little bit too much....Sorry for the hassle, it's just my first show I plan on attending, and I may be a bit nervous!!!Tongue [:P]

kik36.

Boxstock means you can ONLY use parts supplied in the Kit unless otherwise specified as with the "Decals", if you add any AM part or self-made parts it is no longer Boxstock.

Boxstock is a tough category to enter since you cannot add modifications, basic idea is to make sure that everybody uses the same parts and you are judged on your kit building not customisation/accurisation skills.

With the open category it is often the person that spends the most money on AM parts that wins.

Thanks MadModelFactory, that makes a lot of sense. It kind of makes it more about the paint job, rather than the extra $$ spent. I just wanted to make sure I didn't do anything to get my self disqualified. I appreciate all your help, and will post results in the future!!! Happy Modeling!!

Since every tamiya instuction sheet i have seen explains stretching sprue and the rules said you had to follow the instruction sheet, seems to me that would be allowed.

Good luck on the contest! And good luck on deciding what to do about the rules quandry....

Myself just to be safe I would use the supplied decals or AM ones....and pray for the best even with the cheese factor included.
