That is the best post I've read in  quite a while!  I think the fact that your three year old daughter is expressing an interest in our hobby is fantastic.  What a great way to get in some father/daughter bonding time.  You can teach her so many things.  Not only modeling skills, but life skills, patience, perseverance, pride in a job well done ............

My seven year old grandson recently expressed an interest in modeling and I have started him out on a few snap-tite kits to get him started.  Unfortunately, my grand kids don't live with us, but they do visit frequently.  He gets a real charge out of sitting down at "our modeling bench" and working on a model with his Pop.  He has also developed a real interest in history and loves to sit with Pop and watch the History Channel - much to his Nan's dismay.  His mom and dad tell me he is always telling them about something he and his Pop saw on the History Channel.  I'm trying to put together a trip over their Christmas break from school to allow me to take him to a museum ship so he can see and walk the decks of the real thing.  Now my granddaughter, she is another matter.  Eight years old going on twenty-five.  Give her clothes, makeup, shoes and American Girl (and they say modeling is expensive!).

Congratulations on getting your daughter interested in our hobby.  You are a very lucky man.  By the way, your daughter looks like a real sweetie and unless I miss my guess, she is very much "daddy's girl".

Hey guys, oh, and gal Wink thanks for looking!

Owl, no we probably won't paint it. Like me when I was a kid she just wants it to be finished and finished NOW so she can fly it around the living room singing Danger Zone...yes, she knows the chorus Danger Zone. She loves Top Gun. Crazy kid.

Mad Modeler, my dad and I are actually still a tag team modeling team. He stopped modeling for about 13 years and I recently got him back into the hobby. He doesn't want to paint them as he doesn't want to put the money out for an airbrush and doesn't have the desire to brush paint, so he builds them and hands them to me to paint. Its a tricky combination some times but its fun and it gives us something to talk about and look forward to.

Rich, knowing my daughter I'm certain that if she decides to dabble with modeling a little on her own then I'm going to have several trips to the ER. She gets really excited and a little reckless at times so I'll wait til she's 13 before putting any CA glue in the same room as her.

Tigerman, I'd like to see her take it up as well but I'm not pushing it. She does ballet right now so she has her own priorities set, haha!

Thanks!

Jon

I remember when my Daughter asked me to help with a kit for the first time.  It's an experience that only happens once.  Marissa is very artistic and always has been.  I think your Daughter is probably going to get into the kit on her own someday.  Maybe some B-Day you will get a present she made all by herself.  Word of warning though.  Make sure she knows enough not to mess with your CA glue and then pat her cat......  Have you ever tried to find an open drugstore to get nail polish remover on a Christmas Day night?  Another thing to really concentrate on.  The first kit I let Marissa do by herself came out great until it was time to decal it.  What it was turned into was a masterpiece in the style of Picaso.  She was 6 and said she thought it looked prettier that way. LMAO  I didn't stop laughing for ages.  So pay extra attention to her Decal work :)  Good luck.  Someday you are going to need it.

I know many parent/childs teams across forums and countries.

Me and my son often build the same model(different standards of course).

Also many of his friends build kits but get little help/input from parents and I am often asked either by the kids or their parents if I can assist/teach.

The way I see it many youngsters are interested but the parents know little and will often buy a "shiny" kit the kid wants but can't assemble and neither can the parents.

So kudos from me.

Good for you. I hope she takes it up. My daughter was briefly into it when I purchased a Revell VW Bug. Oh man did that kit suck.

Daughter Showing Interest in our Craft

Hey guys, the other day I received Hobby Craft's 1/72 kit of the DHC C-7 Caribou that I'm going to build as a Christmas gift for my father. When it arrived, my 3 year old daughter saw it and was quick to point out, as if I didn't already know, that it was an airplane! With much praise and positive confirmation, I told her it indeed was an airplane, as if she didn't already know....she is smarter than me, anyway. At that moment, she looked at me and said "Lets put it togedder". Well, I was pretty excited but told her that this one is far too complex for us to work on togedder, uh, together. So, I told her we would go out Saturday and purchase a plane that was more her style. She was very pleased by this notion and come Saturday we went to Michael's and I let her pick out a Snap-tite. Not much of a choice really, but it fell between an F-14 and an A-10. My daughter, who has great taste, and seems to be a Top Gun fan, picked the Tomcat. We spent the morning putting it together....well, I did most of the work, but that can be expected. And to tell you the truth, I was surprised by the quality of those little Snap-tites. Add a little detail and fill some seams and they'd be half decent. Any how, unbeknown to me, my wife took some pics of us whilst working.....

Had I known, we would have taken a completed picture, which I may do later today. Of course, that is my son looking on (with I suspect much interest, if not in modeling, than at least having another toy to suck on). So I'm pretty excited that my little girly wanted to do some modeling. Whether it amounts to anything or not is still to be seen...But a day will come when she won't want anything to do with my hobbies, so I'll take it where I can get it!

Have a nice day, gents!

Jon
