I do know that I've spent roughly $2,000 on Ebay for kits since 2008... However, I've also sold about $3,000 worth of miltaria to buy them, so I reckon models have paid me about about a grand, including what I've made on commission builds..

Somewhere in the 1 to 2 grand range. (It's been 9 expensive years...)

Are we talking, just kits in the stash (or stash and built?)

In the stash, maybe $100 - $150.  I have a Tamiya 1/48 Mosquito, a 1/72 hasegawa A-4, a 1/72 hasegawa F/A-18 and a 1/35 Dragon tank.

Reference material, maybe in the $200-$300 range - and only because I had to track down some out of print books.

Tools and supplies, if I add the compressor and airbrush, probably around $600.

Built kits, probably hit the $1k mark, considering the amount of AM I used to buy up.

I couldn't even guess.  I've been buying kits and supplies on a regular basis since 1973.  The stash was about 40 kits in 1980. It is now well over 2000 not counting the hundreds of built up kits and gallons of paint  and glue used.  Several compressors, 5 airbrushes and who knows how many regular brushes and etc.  I sometimes pay retail, sometimes clearance on on sale.  I don't even keep track.  Hold a gun to my head,  I'd say over  $70,000,  that could be low, or high.  Don't feel like taking inventory. Maybe even the magical $229,000.  But i doubt that.

Close to $2000 for my stash, but I paid maybe $700-800 for them. Those are in the last 5-6 years. Impossible to compute all the previous years, as many were gifts. Add countless $$ for supplies and books, and it's still a hefty total.

I know I'm the low man in this one.

Easily under $2k and that's being very generous.

Replacement value as in go to the nearest chain hobby shop and pay full retail? Probably $20-25,000.

Just looking around I can easily say $3000 in books, probably another $4000 in tools & supplies (easily $600 just for the paint), the kits I estimated with $20 for 1/72 aircraft, $20 for a 1/25 car, $40 for 1/35 armor and $50 for a 1/25 semi.

In reality, I rarely pay full retail so I've probably spent 1/2 that amount which comes out to about $1200-1500 a year (x10) which I would say is about right.

$3000 over 4 years.  Got waaaaaaay more than that in ammo for the gun stash.

Now why would you start a thread like this where folks could come and incriminate their spineless selves so a nosey SWMBO can get all nasty and demand both testicals?

Don't worry, I think that guy left 229 days ago...

It's hard to figure out how much I spent in my first phase between 1962 and 1980. I've listed those models, and replaced a few of them. It's probably safe to say I'm spending about $1,500 a year since 2005.

I think for most of us the time we spend far outweighs the actual material costs. I have to agree, this is a relatively inexpensive hobby, and keeps me outa the bars. Mind you, those MEK martinis do add up.

geeeeeeeeee !!!

what you trying to do? get me hurt??

she's about 3 feet behind me, playing Pogo,,,,,,I can't type that kind of number

okay, she's been here most of the years since I started this "theme build"

about 10 K for the kits,,,,,worth about 3 K if we had to sell it, lol

then decal sheets, paints, books, mags, some resin and etch

15 K or so, over the last 10 years,,,,,,,I figure all the kits and books from the 35 years before that are amortized out, lol,,,,,,,and all but one of those built ups have been given away

still cheaper than my old, long gone hobbies,,,,,,beer, pool games and hot rod cars

I've got a stash value of roughly $7500, at regular market cost. My cost however was only maybe around $2000, over the course of the last 7-8 years(that's including all the kits I've built in that time). The vast majority of that was pocket change. Aside from a kit here and there from Squadron (on clearence) everything I get comes from vendor tables. I save up all my change, trade it for paper and hit the tables. I still use my $25 Walmart airbrush, my wife bought me a dozen years ago, don't really have any specialty tools. I'd hate to see the figure on what I've spent on paintSurprise

Does the cost of finishing off and furnishing a whole basement, dedicated to nothing but models count???

I figure around $3000 tops. I don't have much of a stash, and since I do autos mostly I don't need the large reference library, though I bet $500 of that amount is WW II reference.

$20 bucks in the bar only buys four beers around here, so $20 x 365 x 5 = $36,500.

I know a guy who golfs at least 40 times a year and the course he plays is $100 a round, so $4000 per year just to play. Throw in lunch or a few beers at the 19th hole and he's well over $5000 per year.

Modeling is dirt cheap in comparison.

So long folks!

How much have you spent so far ?
Posted by Wirraway on Monday, November 22, 2010 10:09 PM

I reckon to replace the stash (replacement value) conservatively, about 7 grand.

Added to the kits I've built since returning to the fold 5 years ago- about 2 grand

Paint, tools, decals, AM parts, DVDs/reference material,  say another 2 grand  (those Tamiya rattle cans at 10 bucks a pop are a killer)

What am I up to so far, 11 grand ?  If I went out to a bar with the guys every night, would I have blown this much in 5 years ?  BeerDrinksToast
