Modeling and philosophy
Posted by upnorth on Friday, January 16, 2004 7:14 PM
O.K. folks

I thought this could be interesting to try. I recently was e-mailed a list of lessons learned from the working world by a friend. These lessons were worded like old philosopies, you know, cryptic but truthful.

I thought it would be interesting to try this with our hobby, think what you have learned good and bad from the hobby and try to express it as though you were some old time philosopher passing on wisdom.

Here's one of mine to start:

Great box art will draw you to the model, but a great model can't always be drawn from the box.

Who's next, any takers?

I've found that the aircraft mechanics third rule applies to modeling as well:

When all else fails, read the instructions!

Looks like some good ones so far.

You can attract more super glue with styrene and skin than with styrene alone

The #11 blade is a stealthy and cunning workbench predator. Watch your fingers.

The paint rack at the local hobby shop is huge, but its mostly different grays. If you are a modeler of modern military aircraft, its still a rainbow.

I model therefore I am!

As Rene Descart would no doubt have said.

or

'To model, is to validate'

As I am sure Kirkegard would have said that if he modelled.

If it works, it will be discussed on the FSM forums. If it doesn't work, well, sucks to be you!

Scales go, people lose interest, model companies open, LHSs close, but FSM is eternal.

When one tears through the vac bag, one must have an inhailer that's not exhausted. A small part will only jump off the bench when painted a shade that blends with carpet below. They jump! I know this to be true because we would not drop them. They do it on purpose to try our patience.

The desire to build is directly inversely proportional to the time available.

The perfect reference becomes available after completion and shows you something is wrong.

No matter how many pairs of pants you have that match a paint, that paint will never spill on them the opposite however will.

The brush, paint, part.. you want is always on the bottom.

A sale always comes after you visit.

And a few good Trek quotes that apply:
More is good, all is better.

Free advice is seldom cheap.

Here's a few more Trek quotes for modeler's

Normal is what everyone else is and you are not.

"Believing oneself to be perfect is often the sign of a delusional mind."
