I think I have seen that SMER kit.  A friend of mine in HS had it.  He hated the thing. lol

Hang on to that Aurora kit.  As bad as it is, at the rate the price is going up on it, it would send your kids to college..

worst I completed,, a SMER 1/48 Italian Seaplane racer, MC 72,,yuck... lots of time making it fit.. came out pretty well when done.. but eewww.. to build..

I do have the aforementioned Aurora P-61 in the stash..

and.. this one looks as bad as those.. a Nachismo P-38...

If I have a kit that bad, it goes back in the box to be disassembled and used as spare parts.  Too bad you had to toss it.  All the little fiddly bits on helicopters are great for scratch fodder.

Ripcord

All of them.  I'm a Newb.

With that I'd say the 1/48 Revell Apache.  It wasn't the kits faults but rather the builder.  I tried using Krylon Olive from a rattle can instead of my airbrush.  Bigger orange peel than the oranges on my orange tree in the backyard.  The cockpit was difficult to tape with wiper blades and angles.....   I hadn't learn to fill seams is to not start with any to Begin with (new gluing technique. and putty wasn't filling.)  The tail still said revell after painting and was also seamed.  I was in too big a hurry.  It was my first and will definitely be the last model I trash due to my negligence(spelling).  I made it to my trash can prior to finishing.

I don't remember the manufacturer, but it was a 1/48 Mooney Mite.  It would have been an improvement if they just put a block of plastic in the box with a carving knife.

I think that it's because bad fits and inaccuracies as well as deformed parts tend to show up more on the more or less flat surfaces of aircraft, whereas Armor already looks kind of chunky lol.

The absolute worst was an ICM spitfire, second was Ark Models BT-7A which i reviewed in the forum. its interesting that there is so many aircraft kits listed as the worst, more that armor.

It's not a case of wanting it.  It's a case of finding it.  And once found, it's a case of getting it for a price that I can actually afford and that my wife wouldn't kill me for.  $179 is just way way too expensive, and I wouldn't put that much into any model right now.  Besides, where I live now, I would be afraid of a model like that being trashed.  I have a Daughter in the 14 year old clutz phase, 4 absolutely idiotic cats, a 5-6 foot Iguana that occasionally get's out of his cage and runs amok through the house, and if it got smashed, I would feel like total kaka. So it would just sit in the stack like my other large scale and few pricey (over $20) kits, until I have room to build it properly and someplace safe to display it.  So I will wait until we are in better financial straits and I have room for it before hunting for it.  Maybe I will see it on eBay for a pittance.  You never know.  I have gotten some really incredible deals on eBay, on kits I would never have been able to afford otherwise. Besides, it's the hunt that is the most fun sometimes. :)  LOL

1/72 Revell T-90

My god was that kit bad. To make matters worse it WAS my friends model who I was trying to get into model building. I ended up pretty much building most of it due to how bad it was.

Nothing fit, flash everywhere, the tracks were the 100million piece type and of course NONE of them fit right (super glue ftw) AND ontop of that there was a 3/8 gap due to not enough pieces.

My blood pressure still rises thinking about those tracks.

I remember that beast.  My Grandfather and I built it when I was 9 years old.  It was horrible but we had fun doing it together.  My Grandfather was more a Dad than my Dad was.  Unfortunately, that was the last kit we completed together as he died a few weeks before Xmas that year.  I actually was looking for one of those kits to build in his memory a few years back.  I was going to try and build it up exactly as the first kit was (with maybe a little less glue slobber.  I wasn't able to find one though.  I have a Revell 1/48 kit in my stash now, but somehow it's not the same.

But you are right.  It was a nasty kit and took a LOT of work and patience to get put together into a presentable build.

Easily the 1/48th Aurora P-61... Grossly out of scale (more like 1/43rd), no detail to speak of, that which was there was totally an afterthought and the radials's jugs were scribed into the molds with what looks like a dental burr, gear doors molded shut but the struts still were inserted into the nacelles and fuselage, and typical pilot head/shoulders molded into the non-cockpits, covered with a frosted canopy, and the insignia and serials molded in as well...

However, if you wanted a 1/48th Black Widow before the Monogram kit was released, it was the only game in town...

Just to add my own comment about what Fermis said  regarding the ModelCraft F-82... Easily the toughest kit I ever built, but not the worst... Once the sanding was done, the kit went together quite well and actually thought mine turned out pretty good, even if I am saying so m'self...  It lent itself to superdetailing quite well, with little need for aftermarket parts, unless you wanted them... I got away with just building the throttle quadrants and O2 hoses & regulators and vac-forming new canopies and windscreens...I thought I was going to have to use the gear struts from the Monogram P-47D Bubble-top, but it turned out that I was able to clean up the kit parts...

A couple of contenders for my "worst" kit:

Ace 1/72 BMP-1:

Poor quality styrene that looked like they hadn't cleaned out the moulding machine between runs of different colours and seemed to crumble away around the edges of the parts.

The kit also included ridiculous photo etched treads. I've been up close to a BMP-1; their treads aren't the heaviest around, but they are heavy enough that injection moulded plastic would have been the best way to do them in the kit. Being as how Ace is a Ukrainian company, they certainly should have enough BMP-1s around for close inspection to have figured that out for themselves.

The styrene on that kit cracked and crumbled so readily that I never did finish it.

Heller 1/24 Ferrari P4

This kit was pig every step of the way, which is sad because it came with quite nice engine detail for it's age.

The plastic was too soft to take sanding well and it melted too easily even when being very conservative with the cement.

The instructions were also purely text so figuring out what they were on about at some stages took some real doing, especially when the English was questionable.

I got it done, but was never happy with it.

The Minenraumer by RPM. Terrible instruction, warped parts, lousy fit. A shame too because it is a really interesting subject. I will try it again one day.

My worst ever was a 1/72 F-82 (don't remember what co.). It was BAD, so bad, it actually stank!!! Rather than taint my trashcan with the thing, I actually buried it out in the yard....no lie!

The worst, that I completed was Modelcrafts 1/48 F-82. That one made the Oct. 09 Reader gallery!

Equal Time. What was your WORST Kit ever?
Posted by Sparrowhyperion on Thursday, December 23, 2010 9:22 PM

Okay so we all have seen the numerous threads on what was the best this or that.  But after a rather nasty experience tonight, I am prompted to ask... What was the absolute WORST kit you ever worked on.  This means one you have worked on and not necessarily completed.  I will start the ball rolling with my little problem earlier.

I had been out of modeling for awhile so I was and am still not as familiar with all of the newer names in kits.  Because of this, I made the mistake of purchasing a Kitech 1/48 MIG17 last year.  I also have the Kitech SU35..  I decided I needed a quick builder to brighten up ann otherwise tedious night, so I figured I would try the Kitech kit.  This being the first one of their kits I had ever done, I had no idea what I was in for.

First off the plane is very simple.  The cockpit was not even close to accurate.  The cockpit consists of a pilot seat sub assembly 5 parts, a single cockpit shell, a stick which is just a bit of plastic rod with some ribs, a small and badly detailed instrument and avionics cluster and thats about it.  The seat is a pain to put together.  The instructions are not even close to helpful and don't even mention some of the parts.  I had to use Tamiya instant cure thin glue since the MM glue was melting the plastic badly.  Not sure why.

The body shell was a 2 piece fuselage with a primitive tail cone, and nose peice.  The cockpit assembly fits into it supposedly but it took major surgery to get it to fit right.  The same is true about the moronically designed module the front gear plugs into.  Nothing fits just right and to make matters worse, half of the fuselage had a deformity and was cracked almost thru and thru right at about the mnidpoint of the wing root.

The decals are a joke, and the kit in general was the biggest peice of horse hockey that I have ever had the mispleasure to try and build.  I am going to be putting the SU35 on eBay since I have no interest in going through this again.  I had heard some things about Kitech, and I didn't think they could all be true until tonight.  I would put this kit on the lowest rung of the ladder,  or better yet, in the mud under the ladder.  I would rather build a Lindberg, Entex or Starfix kit....  And that's pretty bad.

Okay folks.  Share the love or whatever and let us know about your worst experience.  Maybe we can save some other poor modeler from making the same mistakes we have. LOL
